introduction to Scotland

Situated on a remote peninsula in the North-West Scottish Highlands, 12 miles from the village of Gairloch and 3 miles from the nearest dwelling, our Lighthouse is a unique and exciting place to 'get away from it all'.

Built in 1910 by a cousin of Robert Louis Stevenson, it is now fully automated, allowing the keeper's house to be converted to provide comfortable and homely accommodation for large parties or extended family gatherings, sleeping 20+. The house can be rented for 2 nights or more (3 nights min in high season) but it becomes increasingly better value the longer the let. Rates include linen, towels, fuel for the open fires, central heating oil, electricity & VAT.

The Lighthouse sits amongst some of the finest mountain and coastal scenery in Britain, in a region with vast stretches of roadless countryside where deer and goats roam wild and where a variety of birdlife, including the rare and magnificent golden eagle, can be spotted. The seas of the Minch, which pound dramatically against the rocks, team with life. Seals, dolphins, otters - even the occasional whale - are regularly seen from the lighthouse. Basking sharks are frequently seen in the summer months.

Alternatively, hostel accommodation is available and guests have the choice between twin/double rooms, hostel rooms and family bedrooms. Meals are charged separately (Easter - end of October only) or there is a self catering kitchen for guests to use.
special things to do and see here
We have a wealth of books to suit all tastes and a stack of board games to play. There is a small visitor centre and shop in the lighthouse grounds, a marine viewing room and an interpretive walk leaflet is available. Binoculars and maps can be hired from us.

Special nature watching breaks and a self guided walking tour around the Torridons is also offered along with nature watching day walks led by Chris throughout the summer. Other activities include excursions to deserted sandy beaches, gentle cliff walks, local historical sights (mesolithic caves, Bronze and Iron age hut circles, mediaeval forts etc.), whale cruises and pony trekking. Gairloch itself is an attractive small town with several hotels, coffee shops, museum, a variety of activities, shops, etc. The famous Inverewe Gardens are 4 miles and well worth a visit.

  • how this holiday makes a difference
As much as is possible we purchase locally meat, fish and some vegetables. We purchase dried goods from a community co-operative in Inverness, who also supply recycled paper products and eco cleaning products. Staff come from the next village and I supply them with work all year round. We use local tradesmen for property maintenance and building projects. We place bookings with local B&B’s etc. We work with a local tour boat.

We have an eco central heating system and have our oil boiler serviced each year. We use energy efficient light bulbs and urge guests to turn off lights and turn down heating thermostats if warm. We have showers only and have our own water supply. We do not change towels every day and do not have a tumble drier but dry all laundry outdoors. All cleaning products are biodegradable and all paper products are from recycled paper.

Torridon mountains, accommodation in highlandsWe do not use small portion packs for anything, eg jams, butter. We cultivate a garden, have bee nests, bird feeders and a wild meadow. We keep our own hens for free range eggs. All kitchen waste & chicken waste is composted. Rubbish is sorted for recycling and we send just one small domestic dustbin of non recyclables for emptying each week.

We have an interpretive walk leaflet for guests which contains the Access Code and we have schemes and incentives for guests to help us clean up litter washed up on the beaches.

We support the local community by running open days with tea and stickies each year; by telling guests about local businesses, running events in support of local charities, and purchasing local produce when possible. We run a self guided walking holiday which uses small local B&B’s and eating establishments en route. We encourage the use of public transport by giving guests information & timetable.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
