description
Our accommodation is a family run art boutique hotel tucked away in the Georgian market town of Swaffham. It is part of an area called the Brecks, a truly unique landscape with 370 square miles of forest, heath, farmland, wildlife and cultural history. This Palladian Villa with Victorian extension has been organically restored housing ten originally designed bedrooms, each with its own style mixing contemporary ideas with classical features. The installation of art is a key factor in not only the enjoyment of the building but also securing its future. Most importantly, we have stuck to our own personal commitment to the environment with a comprehensive green policy employed by ourselves and our staff, for which we are known both nationally and internationally.
We have a superb restaurant seating 20 guests and contemporary and wholesome dishes with imagination and flair. Vanessa writes for local and national publications on culinary matters and our philosophy is centered on the belief that good cooking and tasty nourishing food is one of the anchors of friendly life and friendship.
The restaurant has won many awards for its food and wine, most recently the 2007 'Considerate Hotel of the Year Awards' Best of British Food in association with Oxford Brookes/Sustain. We believe good food is a vital and important connection with the rural location and use all local and seasonal produce, organic wherever possible, in line with the hotel’s environmental ethos. Dinner is £40 (4 courses, coffee and chocolates).

rooms, food and facilities
We have a choice of rooms many having been featured extensively in the national press and life-style magazines such as 'Homes & Gardens'. We hope you will enjoy your stay with us - in the land of 'Big Skies'. The en-suite bedrooms are a constant changing canvas to the resident artists. All fully refurbished with stylish comfort being the prime requisite. Art, period detail, natural materials, Bose & DVD players plus the extras to make your stay special. If you want a little more space to relax & chill out in, our suites are there for just that. The Villa dates from 1700, listed as Queen Anne. It is a great example of vernacular Palladian architecture and lends itself to a little artistic indulgence.
‘The Red Room’ is theatrical, crammed with antiques, pictures and rich fabrics. ‘Opium’ offers a cool colonial feel; ‘Edie’, contemporary but with strong period features and ‘Stalls’ a flavour of the old horse block within the architecture but an intriguing mix of old and new. ‘Boudoir’, is our latest, sensual, with a Parisian feel and beautiful antique Italian Bombe bed.
Family friendly: Babies and children are actively welcomed. There is a small supplement of £15 per night for under 12s. We have suitable rooms, baby monitoring, cot beds, cots, high chairs, bespoke laundry, indoor & outdoor toys/games, garden swings and animals. Dietary requirements can be met and we offer a children’s menu which must be pre booked as everything is freshly prepared daily from our locally sourced and organic ingredients. Please note: We are completely non-smoking throughout.

how this holiday makes a difference
|
Our hotel belies any suggestion that concern for the environment compromises quality standards, having been named three times as County Hotel of the Year, and listed as one of the top 50 hotels in the UK by The Independent newspaper.
We have a comprehensive environmental policy rewritten every year and setting targets for staff, guest and management action to reduce waste and energy. Our environmental policy includes a commitment of not only buying locally but also show casing local produce, local artist, artisans and suppliers. Seasonal, local and organic produce always feature in our menus and the hotel's recycling policy leads to only half a bin of waste a week. This is conveyed to guests via menu information, room information, displays of produce in public rooms, flyers sent to customers of local events. We also supply a brochure containing 65 web links sign posting guests to local concerns and businesses. We also have a policy to only employ local people and a have a commitment to train as outlined in the Investors in People programme. We actively promote and encourage visitors to spend and invest in the businesses within the locality. If we are full we offer alternative local accommodation or restaurant facilities. Awards:

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
