The guesthouse is situated in Masakala village, 8 km from Matatiele town (close to Kokstad) on the border of the Eastern Cape and Kwazulu-Natal. This mountainous area is known as the Maluti region (former Transkei). The guesthouse provides a comfortable and secure base for visitors who want to stay for the night, experience rural life and explore the beautiful surroundings by foot or by horse. It is run and owned by people from Masakala village. Traditional entertainment, horse riding and tour guiding are also on offer by individuals or businesses in the village.

We can help organise horse and hiking tours that can include information on medicinal plants, trees, birding rockart, mountains, cultural and historical information, initiation caves. In this way the guesthouse is a local economic enterprise involving village households and providing them with a sustainable form of income generation without dependence on formal employment. The guesthouse was constructed using local architectural ideas, materials, artisans and labour. The exterior and interior of the guesthouse represent Sotho, Xhosa and Phuti culture.

Two rondavels specially designed and built using local architectural ideas and skills, offer you a choice of single double or dormitory style sleeping arrangements; traditional yet comfortable, our accommodation offers hot shower, flush toilets and bath and four beautifully decorated rooms.

As the sun sets and the evening draws in , enjoy a friendly meal prepared by the local catering group; home grown vegetables, fresh produce and African recipes are on the menu, alongside conventional fare requests.Lets you taste sense experience something different.

    Building the guesthouse has given positive thoughts to the Masakala Community. The guesthouse is community owned and run. All tourists coming to the guesthouse will benefit a number of people in the Masakala community. Supplies for the guesthouse come from the same village. Being a Fair Trade in Tourism SA product, the guesthouse also has an environmental and recycling plan in place.
