description
Escape on vacation to a nature lover's paradise on the Island of South Andros, Bahamas. Designed and operated with nature in mind, this luxury beach resort is a resort that showcases the pristine tropical environment. Remote in design and intimate in location, the place is yours for the perfect holiday or honeymoon.

This luxury 5 star beach hotel on South Andros is a world away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and yet located close enough so that you can get there without traveling half-way around the world on South Andros, the southernmost part of Andros Island (which is the largest island in the Bahamas and the least explored tract of land). South Andros is about 30 miles long and at its tip about 50 miles from Cuba. Our hotel is a 1.5 hour scenic flight from Miami or Fort Lauderdale, Forida

This luxury resort offers easy access to natural wonders of this island. Really an island unto its own, South Andros plays host to the third largest barrier reef in the world, dramatic inland and ocean blue holes, miles of shallows and mangrove estuaries teeming with fish and wild life as well as many more natural attractions.
rooms, food and facilities
The main lodge is the "heart of the resort." Here you will gather to eat, drink and socialize with other guests. We have an excellent choice of great wines and top-shelf liquors from a well stocked bar. Special attention is given to every meal. Fresh, local seafood is prepared with a Caribbean flare and served by candlelight on white linen tablecloths.

Situated on a secluded beach amidst coconut palms and sea grape trees, are eight individual bungalows furnished with comfortable and appealing appointments. Designed in the spirit of South Andros and built in the traditional Caribbean style, each is privately spaced and raised up to greet the incoming sea breezes.

This accomodation provides every comfort in the most pristine of tropical settings. Each bungalow is just steps off the beach and is furnished with comfortable and appealing appointments. Private baths with tropically designed showers make your accommodation complete.
SNORKELING
During a day of rest and relaxation, you may want to do a little snorkeling right off the beach at Tiamo. It is fun and easy. The calm waters of the South Bight make a good place for beginners who might want to practice before heading out to the Blue Holes or the Reef. Here, amidst the sea grass and sponge beds, you may find lobsters in a limestone crevice, conch, rays, starfish, snappers and bonefish. Snorkeling equipment is available.

SOME OF THE WORLD'S BEST FISHING
The well traveled fly fisher will be surprised to find a "fishing" destination which also caters to your "non-fishing" partner. South Andros is a true fishing destination and Tiamo is a world-class resort providing experienced local guides and access to some of the best flats in the world all with a level of comfort, style, service and dining that is unsurpassed in such a remote, natural setting.

NATURE TRAILS
Deep in the bush see a side of The Bahamas that few tourists experience. Several nature trails right from Tiamo lead you through the diverse ecosystems found on the island. Marked plants and trail guides allow self exploration of some, guides will lead the way along others pointing out the species and their medicinal uses. You'll see colourful orchids, amazing bromeliads, giant cacti and termite mounds, and wind up at a tidal inland lake or amazing Blue Hole...

KAYAKING ADVENTURES
Kayaks are available for guests at any time. A relaxing paddle on our "sit on top" kayaks in the near shore waters of the South Bight can be an exciting self-guided adventure. You don't have to go far to enjoy the peace of absolute silence with no interruptions other than the gentle sounds of nature. Take a picnic lunch out to a virgin beach for an afternoon of relaxation or experience a spectacular sunset afloat.

How to find us
FROM FORT LAUDERDALE, FLORIDA If you want to avoid Nassau (and typically save a day of travel) fly to Fort Lauderdale and use a private charter service to fly directly to South Andros Island (TZN), clearing immigration and customs on South Andros Island. This 90-minute journey takes you across the Gulf Stream and over the brilliant azure waters of the Bahamas.
VIA NASSAU, BAHAMAS For the ultimate introduction to paradise, you can charter a seaplane with Safari Seaplanes in Nassau to fly directly to us. Spot whales basking in the Tongue of the Ocean or sharks circling on the Andros Barrier Reef, then land on the calm waters of the South Bight and disembark barefoot on our white sand beach.
how this holiday makes a difference
Designed, constructed and operated in the most environmentally sensitive manner possible, this luxury hotel is pioneering a new standard in resort development. During your stay here in the Bahamas we promise you the best in service and the greatest in natural comfort but take pride in the fact that you, as a guest at this hotel on holiday, are helping to preserve this pristine tropical island environment.

THE ENVIRONMENT
This luxury beach resort has the largest solar electricity generating system owned and operated by a private, tourism facility in the Caribbean and Latin America. All hot water is created using thermal hot water heaters - no electricity or gas is used - the sun heats all water. Black water waste (one of the most detrimental wastes to near shore tropical water ecosystems) is dealt with by utilizing low flush composting toilets. Grey water waste (much easier to deal with) also undergoes treatment with natural processes. We also utilize biodegradable, phosphorous free soaps for further protection of our water and land resources.

Each building is elevated using simple columns for both minimum site impact and cooling purposes. (No land alteration was needed, which prevents erosion.) All buildings utilize several passive-cooling techniques: wraparound porches (to keep direct sun from main living areas); white reflective roofs; high-pitched ceilings and a very open design for maximum airflow. Each bungalow has been situated according to the existing nature, placed within existing trees and vegetation for both optimum view of the water and yet maintaining privacy. The buildings of the hotel accommodation are wood frame structures constructed of nontoxic treated pine that is harvested from sustainable forests.

We believe in protecting the environment through every means possible. Prevention of global warming is something that is very important to us - after all, if the world's temperature continues to rise at recent rates, beautiful islands like South Andros Island and The Bahamas could disappear - in our lifetime.

Not only are we 100% solar-powered, making your stay here one which will have negligible effects on global warming, but we have accounted for your journey to see us too! As you may know, trees soak up carbon dioxide, one of the main contributory gases to global warming. And your flight here is likely to have produced enough CO2 to undo much of the effort you put in everyday at home to recycle your waste, be energy efficient, and generally, be a "green" citizen.

So, for each of you choosing to take your well-earned break here, we have planted enough trees in a forest in Lousiana to neutralise all of the CO2 emissions from your flights, making them Carbon Neutral®. And because we value the environment so much we have included this in the cost of your stay, leaving you to relax and enjoy your time with us.

EDUCATION
Guest education is a critical aspect to our environmental efforts here and it can sometimes be a tricky topic. We attract people to South Andros and our beach resort because we offer an appealing and comfortable nature-based vacation experience. No one likes to be forced to be "Eco" and many are afraid of the specific connotation - afraid that their comfort and ability to enjoy their hard-earned vacation might perhaps be jeopardized. We know, and as a guest you will discover, no comfort needs to be compromised in order to be Earth-kind. In fact, it is our belief that those comforts are enhanced.

COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT
This is a critical element for the true success of our efforts. No amount of environmental conservationalism is worthwhile if we lack the support of the local community. Our hotel has utilized to the greatest possible extent local labor and expertise in the construction of this resort. Our staff is educated and trained in all of our efforts and as a requirement of employment, agreed to an environmental code of ethics as representatives of our luxury accommodation. We encourage them to participate in local community cleanup efforts and to try to implement some of the practices they use at work in their own homes.

We regularly participate in local trash clean up projects, donating staff time, vehicles and fuel to aid in this process. We have begun to work with the local schools on the potentials of ecotourism, clean community projects, reef and fish protection classes, iguana and turtle protection classes and will greatly expand this involvement over the next year with the help of organizations like Reef Relief, The Shedd Aquarium, The Wildlife Conservation Society and The Bahamas National Trust.

The hotel is currently initiating a greater effort for local conservation and preservation of natural resources. We are spearheading, with the support of local community leaders, the creation of The South Andros Preservation Initiative, using ecotourism to promote conservation in South Andros. We anticipate international support and attention for this effort and hope to work with a group from North Andros to create a national park system here in South Andros.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
