"Transylvania has always appealed to me, not the way it’s portrayed in second rate horror films but because it harks back to a time when Britain was rich in wildlife and traditional farming, like this part of Romania still is today. Tracking bears and wolves through the forest or horse riding through the meadows before a hearty meal of local food in the wine cellar must be a fabulous experience."

Transylvania holiday accommodation
Located in Miclosoara, a remote little village in the foothills of the Carpathian mountains. The Count's guesthouses date back to the 1800s, although parts of them are much older as some medieval shooting embrasures reveal. They have been extensively restored to regain their old charm and character.
Our family has returned to its origins in Transylvania after 50 years of exile, 4 years of hard work have been invested since then. Through a wide range of restoration activities the Kálnoky family contributes now in a representative way to the preservation of Transylvania's heritage. Visit us in this unknown, fairy-tale land in the center of Europe.
Transylvania is surrounded by a mighty range of the Carpathian mountains. We invite you to discover Transylvania as our grand- and great-grand parents knew it in the 1800's. Transylvania became famous not only due to the fiction of Count "Dracula", but also through the history of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the unique medieval villages and the excellent Romanian wines.
Bears and wolf tracking
Follow animal tracks in the wilderness of our hills. This is one of the last places in Europe with a large wild bear population. We offer trips into the woods at dusk and dawn in search of bears and wolves and day-long hikes through the hills tracking their traces and footprints. As the animals live in the wild, we cannot guarantee success of watching them, but chances are quite good to see them in their natural habitat.
Bird watching
Through every season you can observe birds already rare in other parts of Europe. Black storks nest here, as well as night-jars, bee-eaters, kingfishers, wall-creepers, corncrakes, lesser spotted eagles, ural owls and a large variety of other birds of prey.
Hiking Cross
Miles of uninhabited hills and woods, streams and pastures. We can drop you in the wilderness by Land Rover and you'll have to find your way back to the village or enjoy the company of a guide.
Culture and History of Transylvania
We have prepared several itineraries for you, some more in-depth with contact to the Saxons themselves, a guided tour will lead to discover medieval cities: Schäßburg (Sighisoara) and Kronstadt (Brasov); fortresses: Törzburg (Bran), Reps (Rupea), Keisd (Chizd), Rosenau (Râsnov); fortified churches in untouched and often deserted villages: Weisskirch, Hamruden, Draas, Katzendorf, Tartlau, Honigberg… Many of these fairy-tale-like places are listed as UNESCO "World Heritage.
Carts, Carriages and Horse-Sleighs
We will take you on a tour around the village by horse-cart or carriage.
Horseriding
We offer our guests the possibility to enjoy day-rides between Miklósvár and Kőröspatak in any season. There are no fences, no roads, just hills, forests, pastures, meadows, meandering streams and the occasional shepherd who might offer you lunch. The tours are led by an experienced and graduated English speaking equestrian guide. Our horses are mostly purebred Shagya Arabs. Minimum participants: 2 persons.

rooms, food and facilities
The guestrooms are furnished exclusively with antique Transylvanian furniture. We have taken particular care in making beds and seats comfortable, creating an atmosphere of peace and tranquillity. All rooms have double beds with specially manufactured mattresses of pure wool and duvet covers. Each room has its own electric kettle, with both tea and coffee provided. Comfort is a priority, and we have paid particular attention to bathrooms and by building a sauna. The heating system is also original and based on wood-stoves.
Breakfast is served in a picturesque kitchen. Lunch and dinner can be served either in the dining room, under the arbors in the garden or in the wine cellar. We have extra living rooms and a billiard-room for bad weather or calm hours. You can enjoy vintage liquors and fine books in comfortable armchairs in front of the fireplace (and a satellite-TV set is also accessible if you really can't do without it!).
Our cuisine is mainly based on products from our garden or produced in the village. The bread is fresh from the oven. We do not use pesticides or chemical products. Our menus also contain local dishes, which we feel you will be pleased to discover. You will often have picnics during your trips and a rich dinner in the evenings. The meat and milk comes mainly from animals raised in the village and on its pastures.
Baby friendly:
We provide baby cot for families arriving with baby, and we also place a baby bathtub in the room to the baby and mother's convenience. We also have baby sitting service, in case families with little children require it. In the courtyard of our main guesthouse we have a playground with swing and sandbox for the children. It is convenient for the parents, too, because they can have an eye on their children while relaxing in the courtyard and garden. We organize trips, which suit younger children's pace and patience. There are horse pulled cart rides, that children especially enjoy, they can also enjoy the closeness of nature, farm animals and wild animals in the area, which could be a unique experience for "city-children".
how to find us
Miklósvár lies 3 hours by car from Bucharest International Airport, Romania. The InterCity-train takes 2 and 1/2 hours from Bucharest to Brasov (Kronstadt), where we can come and fetch you by Land Rover. Pick-up at the airport is also possible, at an extra fee.

how this holiday makes a difference
Our Transylvania holiday accommodation provides employment for 14 families. Most of the food we serve as well as the building material we use is traditionally produced in the village and its surroundings. Our staff are now skilled in their new professions, be it cook, guide or restoration worker. All our employees are local and benefit from high training standards. We purchase most goods locally, even traditional building materials like hand made tiles, bricks and lime. Our taxes help the local council to develop the village. Profit generated is re-invested directly in the restoration of our cultural heritage. Thus the entire village largely benefits from our undertaking. We aim at restoring and preserving the historic architectural harmony of our village and its environment. The guest houses are part of the village and our guests become neighbours to the villagers for the length of their stay. We show our guests nature still in its unspoiled way. We monitor wildlife around the village and make the villagers understand why it is so important to preserve it. We promote sustainable tourism also by limiting the amount of rooms available. |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |

We particularly loved the nature tours and found our guide very knowledgeable. We explored and walked many miles in some beautiful areas, visiting amongst other things a sulphur cave, a cave with bats roosting and a river with fossils. In this lush landscape you can also easily take country walks alone and there is such pleasure in feeling that you have found the last bastion of unspoilt Europe - you are never far away from the knowledge that wolves and bears live in Transylvanian forests - wonderful.
