This Hawaii bed and breakfast hotel accommodation is for those seeking the "real" Hawaii. Our spacious country home, surrounded by our orchard, is situated on eight plus acres in the historic Kau District, on the Big Island of Hawaii. Our accommodation area boasts two unique beaches. Nearby are Papakolea [Green Sand beach]and Punalu'u [a Black Sand beach],and the hotel is just around the corner from South Point [southern most point in the U.S.A. and believed landing sight of the first Polynesians.] Our ideally central location makes us a great home base for easy driving times to island sites. We're 45 minutes from Hawaii Volcano National Park and the Place of Refuge.
Macadamias are one of the most prized eating nuts in the world. Kissed by our Hawaiian sunshine and nurtured in rich volcanic soils, "Hawaiian grown" means a taste delight. Our eight plus acre country estate contains a producing Macadamia Nut Farm [we're growing pesticide free]. Enjoy a pleasant stroll on your holiday through our orchard until you reach the meadow. Or take a complimentary educational orchard tour with your hostess and learn the fine points of Macadamia Farming in Hawaii.
Like to get more hands on? You may arrange with your hosts to pick some nuts. Be ready though. You need a strong back as they are harvested from the ground. Guests reserving at least three nights may husk and shell their nuts using our new hand crank machine, and we'll have them processed and packaged for you at check out. Imagine being able to give a gift of buttery Hawaiian Macadamias that you personally hand picked.

how this holiday makes a difference
The island on which we reside has a long time history of agriculture. With the downturn in plantation farming, many "local" people, now displaced from jobs are now trying to produce diversified crops on their own land. The struggle is to make it economically viable to farm here. Many of our young people can not find suitable employment here in Hawaii, and end up moving to the continental United States to find work. The influx of people looking to buy vacation homes and condos can have the undesirable effect of driving up property prices for long time residents. Our challenge is to keep "real" people on the land. We aim to keep, promote and help prosper the wonderful diversified agriculture that exists here and no where else in the earth. We have chaired, first a committee, and now an Association for Agtourism. Part of our criteria for full membership is operating a "working" farm. Of the 5500 farms in Hawaii, 3300 of them are located here on the Big Island of Hawaii.Having 11 of the worlds 13 eco systems right here on this island we produce a multitude of different agricultural products. Our farm is on agriculturally zoned land and we are farming pesticide free. We help educate people about the land. Hopefully they come away with a little more understanding of the land and a natural environment than when they came. In addition, people who stay with us on our pesticide free farm are benefiting the community by out eating at restaurants, going to the grocery store etc. We have estimated conservatively in the past that a 1 night stay with us benefits 3 other businesses, more than 2 nights directly benefits 4 to 7 businesses. Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
