description
Welcome to our small multiple award winning eco lodge in a lush rainforest in unspoilt eastern Dominica, surrounded pristine rivers and forested mountains.
We offer secluded self-contained wooden cottages, tree houses and natural jungle cabins, dormitory accommodation and secluded camping plots and hammock space. There is a jungle cafe, bar, communal room and various natural river pools, as well as a study centre - our Sustainable Living Centre.
We follow a green ethos and have an abundance of environmentally friendly practices in operation. Our land provides much of our food, our rivers provide clean water, and we use renewable energy and promote a sustainable lifestyle.
Our gardens are maturing containing a large variety of all fruit, vegetables, plants, flowers and more, all organic and mostly thriving.
Here is the perfect place to relax, unwind, and do nothing except laze about enjoying our natural surroundings. We have 3 rivers running along the borders of our land, containing 4 different natural swimming pools and an abundance of quiet little spots to sit and relax. Walks up or down any of these rivers or through our rainforest, are delightful.
However, for those of you who prefer a more active holiday, we offer all sorts of activities, both on and off site:

special things to do and see here
Here is the perfect place to relax, unwind, and do nothing except laze about enjoying our natural surroundings.
- Bathing - plenty of beaches, rivers & waterfalls.
- Sports & games - donkey rides, surfing (we are only 20 min walk from Rosalie beach, a wide sandy, deserted Atlantic surfer's dream!), join the local village teams (football, cricket, basketball)
- Day tours - let us take you and only you (no large groups!) around the island and show you the best spots in a 4x4 jeep, with all your food, drinks and entrance fees included.
Birdwatching - Dominica has about 276 different species of birds on the island, all of which are stunningly beautiful including the two species of indigenous parrot, The Sisserou and The Jaco. Expert guides can be hired in this field. - Wildlife watching - turtles may be seen laying their eggs from March to September, and later on in the year, their newly hatched offspring can be seen scurrying down the beach towards their new, watery home. Whale watching trips can be arranged.
- Hiking - a host of natural wonders and trails for all levels of hikers (waterfalls, lakes, volcano, hot springs, national parks etc.)
- Snorkelling & diving - Dominica is one of the top dive sites in the world and diving or snorkelling are definitely the best ways to appreciate the full glory of our waters, both sea and river! Full professional PADI courses are available, at all levels, with qualified instructors, using modern and well-maintained equipment. Please contact us for details.
- Sustainable living workshops & courses - courses covering most forms of renewable energy.
- Art workshops - we now offer artists the opportunity to spend time in a tropical setting, to pursue their work with personalised guidance from a highly qualified fine artist, Chari Du Mond, MFA, who has been widely exhibited in the United States and the Caribbean. Please contact us for details of the workshops.
- Community tourism activities – choose from a range of unique experiences.
travellers' tales
Searching for whales, being greeted by dolphins, snorkelling above seahorses leave a warm fuzzy feeling inside. I feel truly privileged to have been a part of the ecolodge and Dominican way of life, even if it was just for 2 weeks. (more)
rooms, food and facilities
Wooden cottages (sleep 2-3): We offer self-contained wooden cottages, each set in its own large, secluded organic garden. Each cottage contains a double bed, kitchenette, shower/toilet, living area and balcony (with hammock). All have 240V standard British style power outlets provided by our solar and hydro systems, solar hot showers, and all linen & biodegradable soap is supplied. The jungle cafe is located in the forest, 15 minutes walk away from the cottage. The following accommodations are all 15 minutes steep hike into the breathtaking rainforest:
Dormitory accommodation: Our dormitory accommodation includes a mix of bunk beds and hammocks, each of which can be rented individually. The communal campers' kitchen is at your disposal.
Forest retreat (sleep 2-3): These bamboo tree houses & Carib Indian thatched cabins offer total seclusion deep in the heart of the forest. The rooms are a 15 minute steep uphill hike away from our main property, or a 20 minute donkey ride, but it is worth it. All we ask is that you keep the noise to a minimum in order not to disturb the diverse wildlife, that you will surely see during your stay. But relax, there is nothing there that can harm you ! All of these rooms have an electric light powered by our wind turbine, and water is supplied through the use of collected rainwater. There is a communal shower, basic kitchen and communal composting toilet. Fresh drinking water is provided through a ceramic filter in the kitchen.
Camping & hammocks: We are the only fully equipped camping ground in Dominica, and one of the few around the Caribbean. We have a few tents to rent, some 2-man and some large family tents. There is a communal kitchen and toilet as well as full wash facilities for all campers. Bedsheets for campers are not included, but are available for rent. For the rugged traveller, a place can always be found to sling your hammock, or you can hire one of our own! Other facilities: Jungle cafe, bar, communal room, 4 natural river pools for bathing and diving and wireless internet access on the main property (not in the forest!)
Sustainable living workshops: We also offer courses and workshops on the basic use of renewabale energy and good environmental practices. The project runs in conjunction with Lifeline Ministries, a registered NGO, together with various community people, and combines demonstration with hands on learning and access to affordable technology that will be used in homes and farms across the country.
You may either participate in a workshop being held for the local people, if there is one programmed or you may choose to have a private class (e.g. solar electricity, organic farming practices). Alternatively you may choose one of our courses which combine holiday with study, all of which can be tailored to meet your needs. We also accept discounted group bookings. Family friendly: We welcome everyone both young and old. We have free cots, folding beds and high chairs, family tents to rent, a games room, sports equipment (badminton, football etc.) and plenty of space for running around!

this accommodation was highly commended how this holiday makes a difference
Before commencing construction we carried out an environmental impact assessment and stone is taken from the property for building work which avoids transport and pollution. All our electricity is solar, hydro and wind, and our hot water comes from a solar thermosyphon system. We monitor the water both entering and leaving our land by testing the river water in the lab to ensure we do not cause any detrimental effects. We use low flow taps, rocks in the toilets for displacement, and grey water passes through a trap in the plug hole, a grease trap outside and then a soakaway.
All our gardens are organic and we use a rotating 4 bin composting system. Each building has 2 bins (compost and other) - there is currently no recycling in Dominica.
We are actively involved in an island wide scheme to increase general environmental awareness through our membership of the south east tourism development committee. We have also hosted a number of school visits for educational training, showing them our solar equipment, veggie oil truck and organic farming practises. We employ only local people and have set up a local lady with a washing machine so she can not only do our laundry, but also run a small laundry service in the local village.
We have also been actively involved in creating a new library for the village - a previous customer from the USA donated a large amount of books and we installed electricity into an available room in the village which will be used for the project.
