description
This ecolodge accommodation in the Gambia has been designed to mimic a traditional African village. There are 9 large African huts all with en-suite facilities and veranda. The huts are completely authentic until you step inside where you will find the degree of comfort you expect whilst on holiday, such as spacious accommodation, comfortable beds and an en-suite bathroom.

Tours in our own 4 wheel drive vehicles. See The Gambia in all its natural beauty on one of our tours accompanied by a local guide. The Gambia is famed for its bird life, the odd crocodile or two and its colourful flora and fauna.  There is a fresh water natural swimming pool and sun terrace. The pool is filtered naturally at three levels. The Gambian weather ensures that you can use the pool every day of your holiday.

The interior of your hut is as good as any hotel with the added bonus of being detached from your neighbours. A choice of double or twin accommodation is available with the possibility of an extra bed when needed. En-suite facilities make this eco-lodge unusual, no more wandering off across the compound at night.

Bedroom, Gambia ecolodge No matter what you want just ask the friendliest staff you will meet anywhere in the world. Each staff member has an allocated duty, but just ask anyone if you need anything or have a problem. The family atmosphere you find amongst the staff will ensure you are treated in a friendly and courteous manner

We have excellent camping facilities on the edge of the compound. Make use of our Bar and Restaurant. The pool is open for campers use. Shower and laundry services are available.£5.00 per night.
how to find us

The Eco lodge is located at Gunjur, just a few metres from the Atlantic coast. To get here follow the main road out of Banjul airport toward Gungur, approx 30-40 mins drive. At this latitude the coast is a cool pleasant place to spend the day. N.B. Airport transfers are included in your accommodation costs.
travellers' tales
We have had some great holidays but this is the best probably due to the simplicity of it. Stop thinking about going just book it you will be amazed (more)
rooms, food and facilities
Each accommodation unit has en-suite facilities and private veranda. There is also a bar, restaurant, natural swimming pool, 4WD vehicles available for rental.

Disabled access:
the Bantaba, Gambia lodgeAn ecolodge may not sound the ideal place for a disabled person to spend their holiday. But be sure it is. Our lodge is all on one level, the restaurant is the only part of the lodge on two floors. This does not cause a problem as there are two dining rooms, one at ground level. There are no steps (other than to the upper dining room) anywhere in the lodge. Access to all facilities are through doors 790mm wide, well suited to wheel chairs. Bathroom facilities are en-suite, again on the same level as the guests room. Transport to and from the airport is by our own vehicles, so we are aware of guests problems.

The same transport can be used during the stay, to take in other parts of the Gambia, which apart from the hotels is is generally on one level. Tara and David are always happy to help and put disabled travellers at their ease.

Family friendly:
Our lodge is not only favoured by the birding and fishing community. Families with children of all ages enjoy the friendly atmosphere and the attention they are given by the staff who treat the children as good as, if not better than the adults. In addition to the child friendly freshwater pool, with it's full time attendant, there are nature walks forming part of the lodge, not forgetting the donkey, who is affectionately called Donkey by the staff. The beach is only a couple of kilometres away, it is fine and sandy with the added attraction of wildlife in the form of small beach crabs which every child likes to catch, plenty of birds and camel rides. Yet still remaining tranquil.

Transport is available to the beach if you do not fancy the walk. In the local area there are African culture centres with crafts and dancing, all within easy reach. Evening entertainment includes local drumming and dance troupes, you are of course invited to join in. A baby sitting service is available for the younger members of your family, although in the Lodge you are never far away from your accommodation. Visit us with the children and still have a relaxing holiday.

how this holiday makes a difference
Swimming pool, Gambia lodgeThe Ecolodge development was undertaken to help the indigenous people of The Gambia and ensure that no toxic fumes or waste would be produced, in fact all water and waste is recycled without polluting the soil or the atmosphere.

Solar power: We are committed to reducing the amount of fossil fuel required to run it's services and amenities because fossil fuels pump damaging gases into the atmosphere.

These waste gases heat up the Earth like a greenhouse, causing global warming, the resultant rising temperature's, melting ice caps and rising sea levels cause climate change.

Permaculture landscaping: "Permaculture, originally 'Permanent Agriculture', tackles how to grow food, build houses and create communities, and minimise environmental impact at the same time. We can live in a more natural and environmentally friendly way and significantly improve our quality of life. By thinking carefully about the way we use our resources - food, energy, shelter and other material needs, it is possible to get much more out of life by using less. We can be more productive for less effort, reaping benefits for our environment and ourselves, for now and generations to come.

Greywater filtration: Water is a precious commodity. One solution to water shortage is to use some of your household water twice. The greywater from sinks, bathtubs and clothes washes, can be put to use in the landscape, to provide nutrients for fruit and vegetables.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've lead the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
