description
Marlborough Sounds accommodation

This bed and breakfast is 2 hours from Nelson and Blenheim. A spectacular, long and winding road from Rai Valley, leads to our remote wilderness Marlborough Sounds paradise. Our home nestles in a beautiful garden right beside our own beach. The Garden Cottage and the Rose and Dolphin are separate, sunny, comfortable cottage-style accommodations, allowing privacy. Our spacious character, timber home and verandas offer opportunity to socialise.

Both cottages are simple and beautiful, with small verandas and views of the sea, beach and adjacent bush and are supplied with teas, fresh coffee and juice, a small fridge and each has their own bathroom. Our huge open fire, which uses driftwood, is wonderful on cool evenings.

We believe food should be of the utmost pleasure so you will enjoy scrumptious meals, organic seasonal produce from the garden and orchard, fresh seafood as well as other wonderful taste treats. A special outdoor fire-heated bath beside the sea can be enjoyed by sunset, moon and stars, or even in a wild storm.

Sunsets are stunning year round as we lie to the North West, looking to D'Urville Island and to the mountains beyond Tasman Bay. Explore the rocky coastline, swim, snorkel, kayak, watch the gannets diving, or simply be still and let nature work her magic. Dolphins are frequent passers by, as well as the occasional whale, and many different sea birds. Indigenous birds will charm you with their bird song.

Hosts Jude and Rog are well travelled, have lived/worked here for 25 years, and love the Sounds. We take any opportunity to share that love and our knowledge of French Pass, D'Urville Island and the Sounds.

how this holiday makes a difference
Our Marlborough Sounds accommodation is one of several small enterprises that contribute both to the social fabric of our remote community, and to its economic viability. We live in a special wilderness area, which we are constantly mindful of in the way we run our business and the way we practice sustainability and protection of this precious resource. We use organic principles in our garden, and are actively ensuring the regeneration of indigenous bush on our 2 and ½ hectare property.

Again our small community's economic viability depends on small businesses such as ours to bring people and money into the community. We also support one another as our businesses overlap each other all offering something a little different to visitors.

We also use other services in the wider community that contribute further to our community's economic viability. Every visitor goes away with an appreciation and understanding of a special corner of New Zealand landscape and marine environment, its geography and history, and its flora and fauna.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
