description
Set in a private nature reserve spread over 1,000 acres of Central America's last remaining lowland tropical rainforest our Costa Rica ecolodge overlooks the pristine point where the Golfo Dulce meets the wild Pacific Ocean, making it the destination that matches every one's idea of paradise.
The ecolodge was built by John and Karen Lewis as a private Costa Rica ecolodge and nature reserve. Today a conservation easement elaborated by The Nature Conservancy and Cederena ensure that this rainforest will be preserved into perpetuity.
The reserve is connected through a corridor with Corcovado National Park on the Osa Peninsula.
The ecolodge is built in harmony with the surrounding forest and beach environment. The main lodge and bungalows line three ridges connected by walking paths and steps. Built over 350 feet above the sea, the lodge catches the cooling tropical breezes.
The main ecolodge, housing the restaurant and bar, soars 50 feet and is built of local, natural materials. Palm thatched roofs meet a three-story hardwood circular stairway. Climb to overlook the forest canopy and breathtaking ocean vistas. Comfortable, locally made bamboo furniture adds to relaxation in this tranquil panorama of nature.
The ecolodge is more than just a beautiful rainforest hotel or eco resort next to the beach.
This Costa Rica ecolodge is a model ecotourism project that strives to show that "a forest left standing is worth more than one cut down". Besides winning awards from Conde Nast Traveler and being featured in many international publications, the lodge is a pioneer in sustainable tourism employing only people from the local community and being committed to environmentally sound practices.
Costa Rica ecolodge activities
Activities are focused around the rainforest and the nearby Ocean. Rainforest hikes, bird watching, Ocean Kayaking, horseback riding, catch and release sport fishing and surfing are some of the activities offered.
Furthermore, guests can take massages, participate in Yoga classes, relax at the pool with a tropical cocktail or just take a nap in a hammock and maybe observe the birds, monkeys and other animals that come by. For many guests, the highlight is a tour to Corcovado National Park by plane or a night camping in the jungle.
This is an ideal vacation experience for people that like nature and are open to learning about conservation, culture and biodiversity. Honeymoon couples looking for a more active and unique kind of experience as well as families with older children that are looking to spend some real quality time together also enjoy the experience.

Please note that we get booked up well in advance during the high season. The High Season corresponds to the period (1st Nov - 15th Dec & 6th Jan- 15th May) also the holliday season (16th Dec 5th Jan) is a high demand seasontravellers' tales
It was fantastic to be so close to the jungle, and so remote from the real world. The accommodations were first-rate, and the level of service unsurpassed. The local knowledge of, and respect for, the rain forest and all of its creatures was impressive. (more)
how this holiday makes a difference
Our Costa Rica ecolodge was built to be a small 14+2 bungalow project providing protection to over 1,000 acres of rainforest. We place a great emphasis on educating guests, staff and locals on natural and cultural issues. We employ only local staff in all operations and currently employ about 50 people. The ecolodge maintains architectural integrity with the surrounding area and local styles and utilizes sustainable construction methods and materials. We are vigilant in energy conservation through passive design and renewable sources and use a sustainable approach to chemical use, waste, sewage, recycling and water management. We pay attention and respect the wildlife and the natural setting. The ecolodge is a Private Nature Preserve, Reforestation Project and Model Demonstration of Ecotourism and Sustainable Development. The 1000-acre area is a wildlife corridor and protective barrier for the 100,000-acre Corcovado National Park. It contains some of the last remaining tropical lowland rain forest existing in in Costa Rica and Central America. It has birds, trees and plants found nowhere else in the world. The project has successfully protected 1,000 acres of mostly primary rainforest from logging and uncontrolled development making it a sanctuary for a variety of plants and animals. Access to the interior of the 1,000-acre private reserve is by professional guide only. Volunteer reforestation program utilizing guests to plant native trees as a tour they can select. |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
