description
This hacienda & ecolodge is more than just a hotel. It is a project of nature conservation, community development and reforestation offering Agro and Ecotourism at its best. The hacienda is located just north of San Juan del Sur, about a 30-minute drive from the Costa Rican border and an hour drive to the colonial city of Granada. It has its own private white sand beach that is visited by sea turtles to lay their eggs. It hosts ecosystems such as primary tropical dry forest and boasts almost the same biodiversity as the nearby La Flor National Park.

We are part of a full-scale tree farming, reforestation and conservation project that extends over 1,800 hectares. Over the past four years we have planted almost 1.3M native hardwood and fruit and have set roughly 800 hectares of primary forest apart for perpetual conservation purposes. Not only will your Nicaragua vacation be an amazing experience but you'll also be contributing to the conservation of part of Nicaragua's delicate ecosystem. Formerly extinct animal species have been successfully reintroduced and existing animal populations have been successfully protected from hunters.

Your Bungalow
We offer 15 very private bungalows facing west with views of the Pacific Ocean and the surrounding forest. Most bungalows sit on a cliff overlooking the private bay and estuary. They are carefully designed to offer guests shelter from the elements, however, emphasizing a natural lodging experience. All bungalows feature one king size bed and a comfortable sofa bed, hammocks, open-air shower and private deck. The architect used mainly local materials and the wooden furniture was custom made by local artisans. The bungalows are connected to the main lodge by a 100-meter suspension bridge crossing a natural valley. All wood used in the construction is either from the hacienda's owners sustainably planted and managed forests or from legally logged traceable wood from northern Nicaragua.

how this holiday makes a difference
The hacienda is practicing responsible Ecotourism by:
  • Utilizing tourism to acquire and protect endangered primary forest wilderness.
  • Educating and motivating guests into being actively aware of conservation and forest preservation
  • Aiding and integrating with the local community for sustainable development.
  • Supporting the reforestation project on the property.
We do the following:
  • The hacienda is a private nature reserve protecting a significant amount of lowland tropical dry forest.
  • Reports illegal logging and cutting activities to the local authorities and the press and are paying local police to crack down on illegal hunting and logging.
  • Enrichment of existing forest by reintroducing previously logged hardwood trees to enrich the flora and fauna.
  • Reintroduced close to extinguished iguana species to the area.
  • Carefully monitors and protects sea turtle nesting on beach.
  • Hiring only local people from the immediate community with an emphasis on education and training.
  • Utilizing local time-tested natural materials for the construction of the rooms and main lodge.
  • The trees used in construction are either out of reforestation or from certified legal logging activities.
  • All buildings and paths incorporate erosion control.
  • Local guides to inform guests of local customs and cross-cultural issues.
  • On-site managed waste disposal and separation system.
  • Sophisticated water treatment with options to reuse treated water for organic vegetable gardens.
  • Minimized use of plastic and non-returnable containers.
  • Program of student interns from other countries for in-service graduation requirements in tourism.
  • Invited research groups and scientists for dry forest study.
  • The Foundation NicaFrance supports local schools in the area.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
