introduction to Dades valley kasbah accommodation

Located between the Atlas Mountains and the Saghro and Sahara deserts, we are in a privileged place to discover South Morocco, or rather Africa.

The kasbah was built using the traditional materials in Berber villages of the Dades Valley, this is to say earth water and straw to form adobe blocks. These blocks then are used to make the thick walls. The roofs are made of bamboo stems intertwined with cedar logs.

We have 6 double rooms with en suite bathrooms and another 3 double rooms and 3 bathrooms, all of them with hot water showers, available. The large balcony overlooking the cultivating lands on the banks of the river M'Goung is a unique feature of the Kasbah. Even though we have a modern kitchen we have also kept the traditional Berber stove, a clay oven, where we bake our own bread and prepare the most traditional and elaborated Berber dishes.
how to find us

We are on the outskirts of a small but busy commercial town in the south of Morocco, El Kelaa M΄gouna, some 75 Km from Ouarzazate and its airport. Located between the snow of the Atlas and the sand of the desert, the Kasbah is a real balcony overlooking the life of Berber Peoples in the Dades valley.El Kelaa is well known above all for the making of "eau of roses", a perfume obtained from the distillation of petals of roses which grow abundantly here, hence giving its name to the valley where we are; "The valley of roses". This is also the origin of one of the most famous festivals in Morocco, "The festival of roses".

how this holiday makes a difference
This is a project of Berber people as its very important to us that people can get to know and experience the Berber culture. Our hotel is a Berber house and is not exclusive for tourists, all time we are visited by other people in the village and therefore creating constant contact between people of Europe and Africa. This is very important for the local people because they can see that they have a culture that many people are interested to know.

Around the Kasbah live some families without water in their houses. Water has to be collected from the river but now they can come to the Kasbah to use the facilities.

We have built the Kasbah using traditional materials, earth and water in order to conserve the landscape, leaving no permanent structures. This system of construction also means that we do not need to use machines of acclimatisation that use a lot of energy. A house built of earth also demonstrates to the local people that a house of earth is not a factor of wealth and the holidays homes built out of cement.

We have begun a project with the school children in the Atlas Mountains. They have an excess of bag plastic bags and a lack of books, pencils and paper. In order that the children learn that things have a price rather than just asking tourists to give them something for free – we will swap school materials in return for the plastic that they collect which will also help to clean up the environment. The most important factor is that all the benefits of this hotel stay in the local community.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
