Galstonbury

A unique guesthouse for women in Glastonbury

Whether you're visiting Glastonbury to pursue the guidance of your heart, the call of your spirit or historical research, you will find welcome, peace and sanctuary at our guesthouse. After all, this house was once a chapel of the great Abbey where monks welcomed pilgrims. Built around 1480 and probably the oldest private house in Glastonbury, it is known as the Slipper Chapel, because it is thought that pilgrims left their shoes here and walked the last stage of their journey barefoot.

Arch window, Glastonbury bed & breakfastWhile there is no need for such spectacular devotion these days, the house has kept an aura of calm, beauty and comfort. A medieval chapel is not large, so an extension was added in Edwardian times, overlooking the garden.

Its age is not the only unusual thing, it is also a house run by women for women – men are welcome visitors, but the accommodation is for women only. Since some women come here looking for a break from their own family responsibilities, we have decided not to accept children.

Garden, Glastonbury bed & breakfastInside and outside, the atmosphere is conducive to relaxation - there is no television, and the garden is large and on several levels with a Mediterranean patio complete with fish pool and fountain. Further up a terraced mixed flower and vegetable garden has sitting spots here and there including a swing hidden in the foliage. Further up still, a mature fruit and nut orchard and new organic veggie plot give great views over the beautiful Vale of Avalon.

The house is non-smoking inside.

how this holiday makes a difference
Glastonbury B&B accommodation gardenWe are an award winning socially responsible business: we source our power renewably, minimise and recycle all our wastes, shop in our local High Street, are members of the Phone Co-op, and bank with ethical financial institutions.

Most of our cleaning materials and many of the finishes in the house are eco-friendly. We are also mindful of respecting and enhancing the wildlife habitat in our gardens and orchard. Our butterfly population is testimony to this!

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The fact that the house was just like home from home with a wonderful relaxed atmosphere. Michou kindly provides a fantastic tranquil setting, both in the house & garden where I was just able to be totally calm & at peace with the world.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Chill & enjoy!!

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Yes I do as I left my car parked up for my stay so the environment certainly benefited! The cottage is so close to the town, the Chalice Well & the Tor, I simply walked everywhere. Local people were extremely friendly & chatty so I enjoyed spending both time & money sampling the delights Glastonbury has to offer.

4. Any other comments?

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Well, apart from the journey itself: the get together with Michou, our host....

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Just sit back and enjoy... it's so peaceful, you won't believe it until you've been there....

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

I do: we had lots of local products for instance as food items for breakfast (local juice, honey, etc.)....

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Most memorable part of the weekend was sitting alone up at the top of the beautiful garden at the house - it was on a very steep hill.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Tips: avoid the High Street in Glastonbury if possible - there's nothing much there except shops selling new age tourist tat. However, some of them advertise events that may be interesting.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

I could not possibly say. It probably benefited the people who ran the B&B, but we weren't there terribly long. We did eat in a restaurant owned by local people so that would have benefited them. Don't think we had much impact on the environment - our rubbish was recycled where possible or composted.

4. Any other comments?

I'd give it ***. Nothing to do with the place - I'm sure if we'd been there longer and explored more it would have been even better.
