description
Something nature had a part in but in which love shone through,
a very merry wedding dipped in a green organic hue…

This is the ideal setting for your wedding. Hardly touched by modern life, it is a gem of an old manor farm buried in the half-tamed border countryside between England and Wales just as it has been for hundreds of years.

For your wedding celebrations you have exclusive use of our hotel, which includes the Elizabethan room, Cruck Hall, Courtyard, Byre and 15 bedrooms.

The entire wedding can take place here as we hold a civil ceremony licence.

It is unique - by any sense of the word. First built in 1280 when Edward I took Kington away from the Welsh, the building has somehow survived for more than 700 years and now acts as a perfect setting for you and your guests. We are most suited to parties of 50 - 75 guests, and we can help you source all that's needed to make your day perfect from confetti to wedding cakes!
your green wedding
We are the only wedding venue entirely dedicated to organic and environmentally friendly weddings in the UK. From its medieval banqueting hall through the flagged corridors to the grassed courtyard, we offer couples a unique, exclusive venue that always has the environment in mind.

The hotel and restaurant have gained much recognition and offer couples so much…

Seasonal, organic food: This is at the heart of our ethos with Wedding Breakfasts produced from the award winning kitchen by chef/nutritionist Daphne Lambert. Each menu is individually created between the couple and Daphne.

Foods connected with passion, love and marriage are a strong inspiration - in Spring the first green shoots of  asparagus and the yellow  primrose flower,  in Summer red roses, strawberries and sweet ripe peaches. Mellow Autumn brings figs, honey and the richness of saffron, and in Winter warming spices of ginger, cardamom and nutmeg run through.

Green wedding list: Bergamot, bay, tansy and thyme, orchard seedlings, woodland trees, hand made ceramics, linens and wines – the Green Wedding List is an essential part of the  environmentally concerned wedding. Overall it is a collection of gifts, for outdoors and in, made with care for the world we live in.

Marriage ceremonies: Marriage ceremonies are held in a beautiful Elizabethan wood panelled room, and wedding breakfasts take place beneath the high vaulted ceiling of the great medieval hall or outside in the courtyard during the summer months.

The hotel is a canvas for any imagination; the natural medieval simplicity can be lavishly decorated, its rooms and corridors draped in woodland garlands, strewn with English blooms, the air perfumed with jasmine, and the corridors glinting with candle light.

The rooms bow down to be decorated by brides and grooms and lift with the sound of laughter, music and celebration. Our florists are requested to source flowers locally and where possible organic (even petal confetti).
wedding prices
Your wedding is specifically created for you, so the costs will vary depending on what you would like. However, the basic costs are as follows:
Overall hire: For exclusive use of our hotel for 24 hours, we charge £1500. This includes the civil ceremony fee, licence, use of the Elizabethan room for the ceremony, the medieval Cruck Hall for the banquet plus the 18th century byre for an after wedding party.
Wedding breakfast: The wedding breakfast is laid up in the Cruck Hall, menus are based around the season and are created with the bride and groom. Typically we charge £35 per person plus drinks as taken
Bedrooms: The total cost of the bedrooms is around £1720 but normally guests pay for their own rooms.
how this holiday makes a difference
This hotel is run with an organic ethos emphasising the importance of a lifestyle that incorporates seasonal, local and community based production with care for the environment and all things within it. The hotel gained much recognition when it became the first restaurant to be awarded Soil Association Certification in 1997 and then the Millennium Marquee Award for environmental excellence in 2000.

These high standards are carried through to the hotel. We are 100% organic and the garden and the kitchen are certified organic. We encourage biodiversity – we have a pond and wild uncultivated part of the garden.

We support the Soil Association and encourage our guests to join. All cleaning and laundering products are eco-friendly. All our soaps and toiletries are organic. We have showers and half flush toilets to reduce water use. We use environmentally friendly paints.

We build using natural materials and techniques. We employ local craftsmen and all local staff. We compost or feed dogs and chickens all our food waste. We source as much local produce as possible. We recycle glass and have facilities for our guests to recycle. We use 100% recycled paper in the office.

We collect rain water for use in the garden. All appliances are turned off when not in use. All linen and bath towels are 100% organic cotton, every complimentary gift is sourced from environmentally aware companies such as Neal's Yard and Duchy Originals and all cleaning and laundering products are eco-friendly. We employ local staff and buy all produce locally where possible. We have a supply base of local organic growers and producers.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
