description
The hotel is a creative and inspiring setting for conferences and meetings consisting of a square of Medieval and Elizabethan timber frame buildings around a large courtyard with a pond in the centre. This, surrounded by its 5 acres of homestead, makes a unique venue for any company or individuals requiring space and total privacy.

First built in 1280 when Edward I took Kington away from the Welsh, the building has survived for more than 700 years as a farm on the border of Herefordshire and Wales.

Now, after many years of devoted work by the owners, repairing and rebuilding it emerges as one of the most delightful small hotels that you could find anywhere.

There are three periods to the main house: the great medieval Cruck hall with stone flag floors, a snug corner with a roaring log fire, and an Elizabethan wing with vast oak beams. The house looks out on a farm pond humming and blooming with life. In Spring you discover the wild primroses and anemones in the hedgerows, in Summer watch the kingfishers at the rivers edge. In Autumn, marvel at the spectacular colours and in the Winter after a crisp frosty walk, return to a steaming aromatic bath and rollicking log fire.

rooms, food and facilities
The hotel has 15 bedrooms each named after birds found nearby. The bedrooms all have their own private bathroom and each room its own character & decoration. Two rooms have four poster beds and some rooms are for families. The upstairs bedrooms have spectacular views over Bradnor Hill & Hergest Ridge and the downstairs bedrooms have shuttered French doors leading out into a garden. All our rooms are non-smoking.

It is twenty five years since we first opened our doors as a restaurant. Over the years owner & chef Daphne Lambert, has evolved her own style of cooking.

She uses only fresh organically grown ingredients of the highest quality and prepares them in a way that does not mask the natural flavours or strip the food of its nutritional value. Garden fresh produce, tender leaves of young spinach, plump corn, crisp lettuce, small carrots, fragrant thyme, lemony sorrel, pungent rosemary, onions, beans and potatoes grow a few paces from the kitchen door and the chef harvests them the moment they are right.

The food is complemented by a list of rare and unusual wines from small dedicated organic growers. Our cellar has been collected by Martin over the years from the top wine merchants, auctions and visits to France.
surrounding area
The hotel is an excellent base from which to enjoy the untamed countryside of the borderlands. You can walk over the wild hills of Wales or along the Offa's Dyke Path, or explore the peaceful valleys at the foot of the Black Mountains.

We are within easy reach of five golf courses, the nearest being Kington which is in fact the highest golf course in England, where the views are so spectacular your standard round of golf hardly matters. Other activities include riding, hang gliding, rally driving & go-carting, and we are very close to Hay-on-Wye, internationally famed for second hand books. There are many castles, stately homes and galleries to visit and numerous beautiful gardens including the famous Hergest Croft Gardens.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
