how to find our Osa Peninsula rainforest lodge, Costa Rica

This rainforest wildlife lodge is located on the Osa Peninsula, in the southwest corner of Costa Rica. We are halfway between Puerto Jimenez (22 kilometers) and Carate on the road to Corcovado National Park, on the Pacific side of the Peninsula just around the corner from Golfo Dulce. It is one of the most accessible rainforests you can get to, with an amazing amount of birds and wildlife to be seen from your cabin and trails. There are many options available to you regarding transportation. For the most convenient and quickest way, we recommend flying from San Jose, or if you would like to see the sights of southern Costa Rica you may choose to rent a car. For the budget conscious, or if you would like to get a taste of local culture you can take a bus.

travellers' tales
The amount of wildlife is amazing. We saw howler monkeys, spider monkeys, a baby sloth, poison dart frogs and a roadguarder snake, while the various sofas and spots to laze about on the terrace were great for bird-watching, with scarlet macaws and toucans easy to spot. (more)

Bedroom in wildlife lodge in CostaRica One room cabins (2-4 people)
We have 3 luxurious and comfortable one bedroom cabins. Each of them is fully screened and has a private shower, queen and single beds and hammocks. The front of the cabins have a full height sliding door, and the other 3 sides have louvered screened openings, thus allowing for good ventilation on the warm days and nights. A feeling of warmth is created by the use of local hardwoods, salvaged from the forest. You can sit on your porch and have a good chance of seeing wild monkeys climbing in the nearby trees and hear the orchestra of jungle sounds without leaving your chair. Have a set of binoculars in hand, and you can spend hours bird watching.

how this holiday makes a difference
Wildlife lodge in CostaRicaWhen we arrived on the Osa Peninsula in 1991, we found out that it is one of the most pristine areas on Earth, and its forests, were in a critical situation. The logging was everywhere, and without serious regulation by the authorities in the situation, one of the world's finest rainforest would be lost. As we were already coming from the environmental world, we jumped immediately to work on the urgent problem by pressuring the government to stop the uncontrolled logging of the Osa's remaining old growth forest.

100% renewable energies: Our two micro-hydroelectric plants provide our energy; efficient light-bulbs and fridges, portable computers instead of desktops and solar-powered pumps are just part of our effort to minimize energy consumption.

Pesticides, herbicides and dangerous chemicals banned: We don’t use palm roofs for our cabins as they need a periodical fumigation which has a deadly effect on birds and other creatures around. Our swimming pool does not use any chlorine.

No logging and “clean” construction: Of the total 170 acres of private reserve, only 2 acres are in use for the lodge. Construction has been limited to the cleared areas found originally and no new areas have been cut down. We use naturally fallen timber in most of our structures, and only FTC wood in others. We do not use glass windows as they represent a threat to birds.

Objective: 10,000 trees planted each year: We have been a pioneer in reforestation projects. Thanks to our own tree nursery we are able to recollect seeds from many different trees and plant them everywhere around the penisula. We provide young trees to any person or organization who wants to reforest areas.

Waste management and recycling: We buy most of our food in bulk and use refundable packagings when available. As we have pure water directly from its source, which is periodically tested, we don't sell bottled water. Garbage is carefully sorted and recycled. We have our own compost facility which gives us the organic material to plant new trees in our nursery.

Wildlife at lodge in CostaRica National wildlife refuge: We were the first to join an initiative with other landowners to create a National Wildlife Refuge that protects the biological corridor of the Corcovado National Park. In this way, we have put together almost 4,000 Ha to ensure that this part of the world is, and will be protected.

Scientific projects: We have been actively supporting a series of studies of endemic species and wildlife over the years. We are currently participating in a thesis on the population of wild cats (specially jaguars and pumas) in the Osa peninsula.

The Library: A great project that we are involved in is The New Library in Puerto Jimenez. There were no books in town, except the ones that the American community brings and share, but certainly we didn't have Spanish books. In a short time of a few months we made the library. Actually this library is the only one on the Peninsula, and if I'm not wrong, the only one in the south of Costa Rica.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
