description
The farm is set in cultivated countryside at 7100ft and 2km south of the equator. This elevated position provides an unusual micro-climate that is highly agreeable. By day the sun is hot, but because of the elevation the air is cool and there is often a light breeze. At night the temperature drops and it is time to light the living room fire, though it never becomes disagreeably cold.
During the rainy season this constant bliss is interrupted by heavy and dramatic thunderstorms and this can be one of the most interesting times to visit. The closest town is Nanyuki – a pleasant market and trading community 3km north.
Our farm is a perfect base for climbing Mount Kenya and we can arrange a guide and porters for you. It is also very well positioned for exploring Mount Kenya National Forest. The Aberdare and Samburu Natioanl Parks and Lake Berengo - probably one of the finest bird-watching venues in the world are all within exploring distance. It is also good country for fly fishing and excellent for mountain biking. We will be happy to advise and assist you in arranging any or all of these activities.

how this holiday makes a difference
As well as providing employment and retail opportunities in a poor rural area the farm requires guests to sign up to two aims/stipulations:These aims are met by visitors responding to the traditional Kenyan (Kikuyu) welcome and entering into dialogue and some activity with local people. In addition, you will be staying in a totally self sufficient environment. The electricity at the house - even the hot water - is sourced from wind and sun power on site. We have established both a wind generator, solar panels and a solar hot water system. If you try to take a bath and cook atb the same time you may run out of ice for your gin and tonic, but we feel sure that you won't fail to be awe inspired as we have been by the power of the sun and wind! |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
