description
Our lodge is situated in an approximately 3 ha enclosure on the banks of the river Bintang Bolong. The location was chosen because of its unique beauty and tranquility, its innumerable animals and the outstanding hospitality of the inhabitants. Our guests have the possibility to spend an unforgettable holiday far away from the noisy and polluted tourist centres at the beach side. The majority of the lodgings are built on stilts amongst the Mangroves where wooden jetties provide docking facilities.

The complex was completely rejuvenated at the end of 2004, whereby emphasis was put upon traditional building techniques using indigenous materials such as Mangrove wood and clay bricks. The central attraction is our River Restaurant with its large terrace from which you can experience incomparable sunsets. There we serve cool beverages with the best of local and international cuisine, whereby we highly recommend our speciality of fresh fish dishes.Due to the lodge's location in the middle of a mangrove forest, visitors can experience the exceptional flora and fauna of brackish wetlands.

As the flood retreats the receding waterline exposes countless creatures such as crabs and mudskipper caught in the sludge of the river bed. In the evening apes and vultures inhabit the overwhelming Baobab trees, and after dusk great colonies of fruit bats can be seen swarming into the night.

The beauty and tranquillity of this spot will captivate and delight you, whilst we will do our utmost to make your sojourn a pleasurable experience. To achieve this goal we have based our philosophy on strict guidelines in harmony with this untarnished environment.

Truly perfect. The manager Solo was an excellent host and our trip along the coast with him to the Senegal border was an unbelievable experience. (more)

how this holiday makes a difference
The lodge was rebuilt as a non-profit project to support the local community and develop the rural region of The Gambia. The location was chosen because of its unique beauty and tranquillity, its innumerable animals and the outstanding hospitality of the inhabitants.

Inhabitants of Bintang and surrounding villages carried out the renovation and maintenance of all buildings. The same will be true for new buildings. The buildings are made of local materials (mangrove wood, grass, clay bricks). These materials are bought locally. All income of the Lodge stays in the Bintang area, either as salaries or as reinvestment. The lodge owns and operates an 80 hp generator, which supplies the village Bintang with electricity and drinking water from taps. Our guests have the possibility to spend an unforgettable holiday far away from the noisy and polluted tourist centres at the beach side.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
