description
Our lodge, which has been in business for nearly a decade, was one of the first lodges to open in the Kartong area, close to Gambia's southern border with Senegal, and is still preaching our version of low-impact tourism to those in the know. Built in local style, the huts feature sustainable water systems and solar power, while food is locally sourced and largely organic. Set amoung palm trees, right by the beach, the huts don't have an major frills but they have planty of soul.
The lodge is set amongst the palm trees where the bush meets the sea right beside a huge expanse of deserted beach. From the door of your round house to the beach is less than 50 meters. You can sit at the bar in the evening and watch the sun set into the Atlantic. It is a beautiful and unspoiled place and we intend to keep it that way.
The lodge is an eco-tourism project where the emphasis is on providing our guests with a unique African experience where you set the agenda. Our accommodation combines relaxation and exploration where you enjoy a warm friendly atmosphere where you set the agenda.River fishing trips Walking and trekking tours Birdwatching tours Tours to the sacred Folonko site in Kartong Art, music and cultural sessions Outing to the main towns and markets. Cooking demonstrations Batik
At the accommodation we have: Mountain bikes for hire A boat for river fishing and trips Body surfing boards for free, when you like Musical instruments

The lodge is owned and managed by a Gambian woman from the local village. All profits are reinvested in the lodge and therefore the local community. We fund local projects and employ local people. We buy local produce and use local skills and artisans. We have a no cutting policy and is planting hundreds of extra trees every year. We use sustainable water and sanitation solutions and uses solar and wind technology for power. |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
