description
The island, with an area of only 25 hectares, is one of the smaller of the Seychelles granitic islands, a private nature reserve, home to endemic birds, sea turtles, tortoises as well as a variety of other endemic flora and fauna.

This island is a unique retreat and offers an extraordinary nature experience in exceptional comfort and with privacy found in very few other places on earth. A maximum of ten guests are accommodated at any one time and share the island with its natural inhabitants, offering some of the closest encounters with nature available in the Seychelles.

The island has a beautiful, white sandy beach almost one kilometre long, which fringes the island on the eastern coast. Between September and February, Hawksbill turtles come ashore to lay their eggs, and it would be unlikely that a guest who stays for three or four days during December and April would leave without having the opportunity to observe this rare and wonderful sight.

Bedroom, Seychelles luxury accommodationThe Seychelles Magpie Robin, one of the world’s rarest birds is found on the Island. Other endemic birds are the Seychelles Warbler, Blue Pigeon, Sunbird, and Fody. Tens of thousands of seabirds nest on the island throughout the year. These include Noddy and Fairy Terns, Shearwaters and Tropicbirds.

The island’s ecologists are available to take guests on guided walks and explain about the various aspects of the fauna and flora and inform guests on the conservation programs. In order to protect this delicate ecosystem, we prefer guests to arrive by helicopter thus ensuring against the introduction of any alien species.

Our mission is to promote and practice nature conservation and our aim is to share this philosophy with our guests. None of the money paid by guests for their stay leaves the island, all revenue is channelled directly back into ecological work programs.

how this holiday makes a difference
fairy turns, Seychelles luxury accommodationThe island is one of the leading light in Seychelles on environmental impact management:
  • 8-10 visitors maximum
  • Strict measures to recycle and minimise waste
  • There are 350,000 litres storage capacity for rainwater
  • Rain water is purified through UV filters and sediment filters. All water used, including the pool, is collected rainwater
  • Solar power is used to heat water and for essential daily needs. Even the freezers need only 4 hours of power
Local benefits include jobs, market outlets, training, and targeted support to local NGO’s. We are co-sponsoring an environmental centre on nearby Praslin Island.

At the local level, we employ local staff for all works on the island, either as permanent resident staff or on short consultant works or contracts. Secondly, all produce and goods are sourced locally, (not the case; whilst we source locally through retail outlets many of the goods are imported) from nearby Praslin Island and Mahe, and all services are contracted locally.

Sea turtle, Seychelles luxury accommodationWe are supporting local NGO's, Nature Seychelles and Wildlife Clubs, in the development of an environmental education centre on Praslin Island, called the Island Conservation Centre. It will receive thousands of visitors from schools, local tours and international guests. It will be a focus for training seminars. The Centre has a broad focus to include cultural events and local history, and how this relates to environmental awareness.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
