Southern Leyte holiday accommodation, Philippines

The hotel is set on the shores of Hinunangan Bay at Tahusan Beach, Southern Leyte, Philippines surrounded on two sides by lovely scenic mountains and facing the two off-shore islands of St. Peter and St. Paul.

The hotel is built in the Spanish American style and each room has its own décor with satellite flat TV, hot and cold showers, air conditioning, floor fan and two queen size beds. The 'beach front rooms' have a private patio and the 'garden rooms' share an interior lanai.

The gardens are landscaped with tropical trees, plants and flowers with waterfalls and a japanese koi pond. The roof top terrace has a bamboo gazebo with a bamboo bar and provides magnificent views across the bay and islands.

The entire hotel is surrounded by high walls which provide complete privacy and security. The guests can enjoy the tranquil gardens overlooking the ocean and a private gazebo amongst the exotic plants and flowers of the entrance courtyard.

Honeymoons: The hotel has an idyllic setting for honeymooners and newlyweds with its very private location and access to the beach. Surrounded with high walls, beautiful gardens and fountains we ensure our guest complete privacy and security.

NB: The rainy season on the Pacific side of the islands is from December to March, which brings a slight reduction in temperature (from around 90 degrees to 80 degrees) and stronger winds when there may be perfect conditions for surfing and wind surfing. The rain can be heavy at times but usually is for short periods.
special things to do and see here
Activities available include volleyball, scuba diving, boat tours, cave and waterfall exploration, fishing and walking. Or you may prefer to relax on the beach with one of the books from our library! We also have an outrigger boat that is available to the guests for picnic trips to the white coral beaches of the islands of St Peter and St. Paul.

how this holiday makes a difference
We are very conscious of the enviromental impact here and energy usuage is of primary concern to us. We aim to minimise energy consumption and approximately 99% of light bulbs are fluorescent. The buildings were designed to take advantage of cross breezes to minimise the need for aircon/fans, but should these be needed, guests are encourage to use the floor fan first. Walls and ceilings are concrete and all windows have vinyl frames with built in screen to ensure the minimum loss of aircon. In addition, we use on-demand water heaters.

We are fortunate enough to have abundant water here but none is wasted as we return all used water via leech fields to the underground water aquifer.

The restaurant is entirely constructed of readily available bamboo, with natural fibre decor. We recycle waste wherever possible and food scraps are fed to pigs which in turn provide our restaurant with pork. All beer and soft drinks are in refillable glass bottles and the use of cans and plastic is minimal.

We encourage and support local villages in their efforts to develop local caves as a tourist attraction. We also support a local ecotourism organization who is actively making efforts to protect the mountains, caves and waterfalls, ensuring that tourists do not inadvertantly disturb the environment of those areas.

The local government, NGOs etc. have the use of the satellite internet service in our office, the only available internet for 100 miles. All government employees are required to have an e mail address to be able to contact and receive communications from Manila, so our internet is a vital part of the local infrastructure.

We also made the descision to make this service available to the entire area as the best contribution we could make to the Philippino people and our local community. The internet is also used by school students, teachers, wives contacting seamen husbands and foreigners.

The local tourist board uses our facility to design tourist brochures and search for information and communicate with other tourist organisations. The restaurant host most government functions and employees of the schools and municipal are frequent users.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.

I found the hotel on your website and booked it in May with my new wife, on honeymoon. I need to point out just what a wonderful time we had there. If you are looking for a bit of quiet, secluded Filipino life then this is the place. The locals were all very friendly, the beach was beautiful and undeveloped. The hotel staff treated us really well and even loaned us their Kayak for rowing around and fishing etc. The nearby restaurant is amazing and we really enjoyed eating our way through the menu - Filipino food and a few western favourites done Filipino style. I wish I could go back.
