description
A beautiful beach accommodation in Tobago, superbly located overlooking the Bay of Castara, with stunning views of the Caribbean and mountains.

The six quality accommodations are set right above the beach in lush tropical gardens.

Backed by the deep green of Tobago rainforest (the oldest protected rainforest in the Western Hemisphere) and framed by mango trees and bamboo, this beach accommodation is a tropical paradise enabling guests to relax and live in the landscape around them.

The beach accommodation consists of 2 new all-wood Haiku lodges plus a renovated Fisherman’s shack and 3 quality apartments, all of which can be rented for holidays separately or combined for larger groups. The lodges and apartments are specially designed to create open, spacious living areas that allow uninterrupted views, cool sea breezes and the natural sights and sounds of Tobago; the ocean, rainforest and village. The accommodation sits gently on the land, reliant on natural air flows for cooling, and reflects grace, simplicity and restraint.

Tobago beach accommodation, four-poster bedOur philosophy is to create a small eco resort in Tobago which reflects principles of beauty, balance and respect and we endeavour to reflect these aspirations in our buildings, the gardens, in the relationships with the people we work with, and with our clients.

Outside is one and a half acres of gardens with sun terraces, a sheltered pagoda, barbecues and shady spots where you can relax under the mango trees and listen to the mot-mots calling. Banana palms and bamboo grow below with papaya, lemons, plantain, avocado, orange and limes to be enjoyed.

The basic principle is looking after yourself in well resourced self-catering accommodation with good local back up and support that is free from the constraints and protocols of hotels. Our support team are local to Castara and are either neighbours or living close by in the village.

Tobago beach accommodation, children on the beachFamily friendly: Lots of our guests arrive with their children and are welcomed by us and in the village. Our youngest daughter often makes friends with the children of visiting clients and also introduces them into the village. Our neighbour, Duck, has a young teenage son who also gets to know visiting children.

We do not offer specially arranged clubs or events for children. Visiting children find that they are invited into lots of local activities such as boat trips, barbeques, beach games or simply playing with others. The reviews on our website make lots of references to children and how they enjoyed themselves.
Tobago beach accommodation activities
We are a four minute walk from the beach, village and local services. Rainforest & boat trips can be arranged.

Tobago beach accommodation, birdlifeBirdwatching: The Visitors’ Books abound with references to birds and wildlife. Hummingbirds appear outside the apartments every few minutes; Mot Mots, together with Blue Tanagers and Bananaquits, visit the bird feeders; Green Parrotlets squawk by in flocks, interspersed with the noisy Cocricos. Visitors have reported seeing more than 50 species of birds just from their deck and the garden. Birdwatching trips in the Tobago rainforest with renowned ornithologist Newton George can also be arranged – truly a memorable experience.

travellers' tales
We had a wonderful honeymoon. The best bit was staying in this accommodation - because we interacted with local people and we were in self-catering accommodation, so we didn't feel locked into buying expensive restaurant and hotel food.  (more)
rooms, food and facilities
We have several options offering high quality accommodation to suit a range of requirements and budgets. Meals can be cooked by arrangement.
  • Tobago beach accommodation, outdoor diningMain house accommodation: A wooden structure divided into a two bedroom penthouse apartment (Rainforest, sleeps 4) with two one bedroom apartments (Hummingbird 1 and 2 each sleeps 2, below). Each can be rented separately or combined for larger groups or families.
  • Fisherman’s Lodge accommodation (sleeps 2): A renovated shack offering 800 square feet of spacious living with a large double bedroom, living room, and covered deck area.
  • 2 wooden haiku lodges, each with very high quality and spacious accommodation: Coasthanger accommodation (sleeps 2) has one bedroom and an open plan living area, kitchen, shower room and porch. Birdsong accommodation (sleeps 4) has similar open plan living areas but with two bedrooms and two en-suite shower rooms.
All the accommodation offers open, spacious living areas and comfortable seating for both dining and relaxing. Each has stunning and uninterrupted views of the bay and the ocean. The house, with its three apartments, has dividing walls and floors that are well sound proofed to ensure privacy and tranquillity. In March 2005, we developed a wooden viewing deck and pagoda perched on a grassy outlook overlooking the bay, with panoramic views all along the Tobago coast. All our guests are invited to share its use, and to explore the gardens.

We would point out to visitors that our accommodation is located on a hillside overlooking the beach. Access to and from the beach involves a 75 yard walk up a paved, well-lit path. In October 2005 we created a paved road and car park so vehicular access is now much simpler and clients can arrive and walk to all the accommodations without effort. As part of this new development we also created new facilities to ease the disruption of vacating the accommodation on departure days and now have a shower room and toilet for use on departure day and a secure baggage room with security safes, so that clients can be free to enjoy their final day.

how this holiday makes a difference
Tobago beach accommodation, locals on the beachWe are passionately committed to adding value back into the community in Tobago that has given ourselves and our clients so much. We provide quality employment for a number of local people. The beach accommodation is managed by a local couple who ensure that everything is ready for guests when they arrive, and who organise the accommodation, meals and transport. Five other local people work in our team looking after the gardens and the accommodation.

The construction of the beach accommodation was undertaken by local people and over three years some 30-40 people were involved. Over this period there was a good deal of skill development amongst the people involved. This commitment to work with people in the village has helped to create a warm atmosphere towards visitors.

Our guests take advantage of lots of the services available in the village and this has a very positive impact on the local economy. Shops and restaurants benefit daily, as do the people offering rainforest walks and boat trips around the Tobago coast. The design of our beach accommodation, with its stylish timber structures that sit gently into the landscape, has generated lots of positive comment and a recognition that development does not need to cause damage to the environment of Tobago. Guests and staff are encouraged to respect and care for the environment and our website and visitors books are filled with comments and ideas on how to protect & sustain this unspoiled landscape.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've lead the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
