introduction to Berber accommodation in Morocco
Dar Tassa, literally meaning the home of motherly love in the local Berber language, extends a heartfelt welcome to all who wander to our corner of the world. An Eco-retreat in a serene, mountain setting, we are located just over 60 minutes drive from Marrakech inside Toubkal National Park, home to the highest peak in North Africa (Jbel Toubkal 4165 m).
Our cosy refuge provides an escape from the hustle and bustle of the city, with all the modern comforts and added charm of traditional Moroccan hospitality. From the moment you arrive we greet you with a steaming cup of mint tea. The wild nature of this place and the warm nature of its people help you understand that marhaba, "welcome", is more than an expression, it's our way of life here.
Crowning the high altitude hamlet of Tassa Ouirgane (at 1300 m), the tiled rooftop provides a restful platform from which to soak up the stunning 360 degree panorama: spanning the snow capped peaks of Toubkal Park, sweeping down to give a bird's eye view on daily life in a sleepy Berber village, and flowing along the verdant riverbank to the distant vistas of the Azzedine Valley.

how this holiday makes a difference
|
We are a small Berber house built using traditional materials & methods "pisé" like the rest the houses in the Berber village: this is ideal for keeping heat during the winter & it cooler in the summer as well as conserving the landscape it also saves energy.
We used local builders & craftsmen. We employ local people to run the house and local guides and muleteers to take our guests for walks. In this way we are providing jobs to the community & help keeping these people close to their families rather than having to leave the village & move to Marrakech to look for a job there (in most cases they end up living in the slumps in outskirts of the city). We supported & sponsored the Tassaouirgane association in introducing water meters to all houses in the village, repairing all the old pipes & saving heaps of water. A 3% of our taking is handed to the village association to help set up a rubbish clearance system, we provided the bins & we are working with the local school to educate the children in the village not drop lolly papers & are also working with the local mosque to encourage the adults to look after their environment. We offer a carbon offsetting scheme where guests can plant a tree or donate fruit trees to local families. We use solar power for heating the water & we encourage guests to save energy by only washing dirty towels & sheets. All organic waste is fed to the animals. We are a platform where cultural exchange between the Berbers & the guests are encouraged. |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
