Le Marche accommodation in Italy

Our charming small country house lies in a 185-acre organically run farm, in sight of the town of Urbino (registered in UNESCO's World Heritage List), nestling in a landscape of gentle, rolling hills, rich in wild flora and fauna, where ancient oaks are still protected as they were in the times of the Dukes of Montefeltro. We grow organically our own wheat, fruits and vegetables and raise our cattle, pigs and poultry with 100 per cent natural feed; from our fresh organic produce we make our own bread and pasta, jams, wine and traditional home cooking all as flavourful as they are healthy. In Autumn we also have truffles from our woods.

Come and stay during the second half of July in Urbino for the 35th Antique Music Course and Festival. Urbino becomes an international meeting point for musicians from all over the world creating a fantastic atmosphere with people playing instruments behind every window in town and dancing nights organized in the square.

Our first priority is the comfort of our guests: so our rooms were designed to provide a quiet stay and are both acoustically and thermally insulated. The home is fitted with solar collectors and the heating system is run using renewable energy, so as not to waste precious resources.

The smiling service and high standards of both food and accommodation will best suit persons seeking superior quality in an elegant and tranquil setting, the perfect location for exploring the delights of Central Italy and many famous Renaissance towns.Guests may swim in our pool, enjoying a sweeping view of the landscape.

traveller reviews for Le Marche accommodation in Italy

The welcome was exceptional and we would definitely return, if lucky enough to be visiting again. (more)

We also have a self-catering apartment for 2 people: kitchen (including oven and dishwasher), sitting-dining room (tv, cd player), double (queensize bed) bedroom with large storage area, bathroom (washing machine, bath tub, shower), private garden with chairs etc. and access to the shared pool (just 10 mt from the, secluded, private garden).

Children over 12 welcome. The rooms are non smoking. We have stables available for those who bring their own horses. In addition, our own horses are at our guests' disposal for lessons and walks in the countryside.

Organic food
At our farmstay you’ll have the possibility to try some of the typical products of the region: DOP cheeses Casciotta di Urbino and Ambra di Talamello, organic cheese, ricotta and lamb by Luca Pala, Marchigiana beef from our own organic farm, organic extra vergin olive oil from Fattorie Petrini, typical salamis such as Ciauscolo and Coppa di Testa (some home-made and some from Doriano Scibč), white truffle from our woods in October, home made preserves, organic fruit and vegetables from our kitchen-garden.

Breakfasts feature good coffee, a variety of teas and herbal teas, organic milk, yogurt, home-made fresh cheese or ricotta by Luca Pala, home-made cold meats, fresh or home-preserved fruit, fresh tomatoes (when available), home-made jams, breads, cakes and buns, local organic honey.
Truffle Season!
From the beginning of October white truffles (Tuber magnatum pico) grow in our woods. White truffles can't be grown, the only way to enjoy their pungent scent and flavour is looking for them with a well trained dog (or a pig in other parts of Europe). We offer you the opportunity of enjoying the countryside in Autumn in a quite different way: you can follow our neighbour and his dog in their truffle hunting walks. Of course after the walk you can try gorgeous home-made pasta with a generous shaving of fresh white truffle!
how to find us
At the end of the Fermignano ring-road, in the Urbania direction, turn left after 900 m and follow the road-signs for 3,6 km.Or:- leave the Fano-Roma "Superstrada" at the Acqualagna/Piobbico exit, proceed in Piobbico direction until Pole. At 750 m from the Pole sign-post turn right towards Castellaro and follow the road-signs for 3,3 km.

A car is a necessity. You can arrive at Fermignano by train and bus and we can pick you up there, but the Locanda is 3 km away from the nearest bus stop and local transport is not very good.
how this holiday makes a difference
Keeping in mind the philosophy that "…one should tread lightly on the earth…" we have been an Organic farm since 1981 and is AMAB member, the farm is also certified by IMC.

The Locanda (a farmer’s house built in the 1920s) was restored in 1998 with special attention to energy conservation: the windows are double-glazed, the house is thermically and acoustically insulated and is fitted with solar collectors. The heating system is run using renewable energy: sun power and a low consumption wood stove (the wood we use comes from our 20 hectares woods gathered when we are cleaning the woods or pruning). The house is fitted with low consumption light bulbs and we are planning to install solar panels for producing electricity soon.

We organically produce in the farm more than 70% of the food we serve in the restaurant and we buy all we can from nearby farms, most of them organic. This way we also reduce plastic wrappings, cans, etc. All the house-linens are made of 100% natural fibres to minimize possible allergies while providing a high level of comfort. In the bathrooms you’ll find soap dispensers, we don’t use disposable items such as prepackaged soap, plastic cutlery or glasses.

We ask our guests to join us protecting the environment:
  • Smoking is not allowed inside the Locanda.
  • For the environment’s sake we change the towels and bed linens twice a week. Please consume water consciously.
  • We invite our guests to make sure that the lights and the ceiling fans are off when they leave their rooms. Please keep the windows and shutters closed during the hottest months.
  • We provide recycling bins for cans, plastic and paper.
  • Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.

    1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Most memorable was visiting the hill top towns of Le Marche, especially San Leo & Fermo.

    2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Be prepared for all weathers! Our experience on visiting Italy this time of year was a bit off mark from the sort of weather we had, supposedly the worst for 57 years!

    3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

I hope so. We used local restaurants & shops and recycled as much of our waste that we could.

    4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

This is a difficult one, as the weather was a great factor in our holiday, but if you take that out of the equation we had a lovely restful & quiet holiday. The accommodation was fantastic as were the owners who were extremely helpful. We didn't want for anything, except a bit less rain and a bit more sun!!

    1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

It's difficult to isolate one memorable or exciting event out of a period of time that felt so integrated. The journeys we made to different towns and villages in the region were always exciting; even the smallest community had something special: a castle, an ancient fort, a sacred work of art, to see. The mountains were extraordinarily beautiful and wild; we loved our walks in the Furlo Gorge and the Gorge of the Hermitage. If we return, we would want to find more walking trails in the mountains.

Being able to divide our travelling time between wild natural places and beautiful villages and towns was very rewarding. Urbino, in particular, with the richness of its art and architecture, was wonderful to visit. The Frassassi Caves were spectacular, although this was the only place where I felt we were being 'processed' as tourists, and where there was a strong commercial current running underneath the natural site itself, which detracted from its majesty and beauty. When you are in a place that is well over a million years old, it feels oppressive, and disrespectful to the site itself, to be rushed through it!

Underneath all the beauty and the wildness of the region, we both appreciated deeply the friendliness and hospitality of the people we met on our journeys. The sense of community and connectedness between people of all ages was tangible: the respect for local history and a refusal to conform to the corporate, the bland and the tawdry was very striking and, we felt, contrasted strongly with our own landscapes in England, where so often, one town looks exactly like another and where historical sites have been eradicated in favour of shopping malls....

And, back home, the place where we were staying was equally memorable. It did feel like 'home' for the two weeks we were there. It was beautiful, it was quiet, it was private, and we were treated with enormous generosity, warmth and care by both Giulia and her family. It allowed us to relax and settle into a pace of living that neither of us have been able to inhabit for years, where it was possible to track the sun through the sky from morning to dusk, and feel happy to have done nothing more than read, swim, sit in the sun, walk around the grounds and be loving to the animals around the place.

I was unwell for the first 5 days of the holiday and Giulia went out of her way to help, both in terms of getting me a doctor and offering to translate for me when he arrived. Thank you.

    2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

As with all holidays, it's important to be clear about what you want from your time on holiday. We wanted a peaceful and beautiful environment: with choices about places to go, but without feeling saturated by possibilities and demands on our time.

This region of Italy is very beautiful in many ways. It needs more time than a few days to appreciate it.

We both wished we had some fluency and confidence with the Italian language. We did try to talk Italian and, when we did, we were treated with great courtesy and patience! However, our lack of ability frustrated us both and we both felt we would want to work harder at being more conversant in the language next time we go.

We have both made a decision not to fly any more, because of the damage it wreaks on our environment. We therefore made the journey by trains, and hired a car whilst at the farm. This worked really well. The journey took longer, but became an integral part of the holiday itself and was exciting in its own right. I would therefore encourage other people to do the same, and take the time to plan your journey accordingly.

    3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Yes, I think so. Because we were on a working farm, it was clear that the revenue from holiday was being used directly to benefit the working enterprise of the farm itself, and the people who are working on it. We chose this venue because it was an enterprise committed to organic principles and conservation of the environment; we would both have welcomed having this ethos even more evident than it was. For example, we were happy to separate out our rubbish into what was compostable and what wasn't, and we did so, but there wasn't any requirement for us to do that.

The commitment that Giulia felt towards the farm was obvious; I would have liked to have walked round it with her, had that been possible, but I didn't get round to asking her - I would next time!

    4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

    Wonderful. Thank you.

We thoroughly enjoyed our holiday at this accommodation. Beautiful setting, spotlessly clean room, tastefully decorated. Excellent food using local produce. Friendly helpful hosts. Superb swimming pool. If you are looking for an away from it all break this is it. I would certainly recommend it.
