description
Our Algarve holiday accommodation is an inspiring and lively place for nature lovers, artists and all other people who seek pleasure but also understand and value silence.
Built in 1730, this is an enchanting 6-ha estate situated in the countryside of the Algarve in Portugal. Only 5 km from Lagos and 1 km from the beach it is a house with character due to its high rooms with authentic bamboo ceilings and thick walls.
The house is surrounded by all kinds of little terraces with colourful flowers. Each terrace has its own atmosphere. The house is named after the Alfarrobeira tree which stands next to the building. It is a huge carob tree, hundreds of years old.
As the house is built on a hill, there are magnificent views of the rural country with its old almond, fig and olive trees. Even the distant mountains of the Monchique can be seen. The Quinta is an ideal point of departure to explore the Algarve.
Two of the buildings belonging to the house have been converted into guesthouses. They have been rebuilt in a traditional style and decorated with antique furniture. One of them, called 'A Granja' , is connected to the main house, but has its own entrance. This house contains a double bedroom, a living room with a fireplace and a sofabed, a kitchenette with an antique natural stone sink, an azulejo tiled bathroom and two private terraces.
The other house, 'A Vivenda', is freely situated. It has one twin bedroom and a double bedroom, a big living room with a huge antique fireplace and a sofabed, a separate kitchen (with a beautiful fridge, Italian cooker and dishwasher), a shower, a laundry room, a big veranda and a private terrace.
Both guesthouses are centrally heated and there is a large swimming pool, surrounded by trees and flowers and decorated with antique sun beds, with restful views over the nearby olive groves. The pool can be used by guests.
By Car: Driving to our Algarve holiday accommodation from Faro airport, take A22 direction Portimao/Lagos.

Baby friendly At our Algarve holiday accommodation we are extremely family friendly as there is a lot of space for children to play and to discover nature (feed the horses, play with the dogs). We have a large swimming pool with a separate section for small children. We have animals (2 horses, 3 cats, 2 dogs, 1 sheep and chickens) and 3 children ourselves who love to play with other children. The beach of Meia Praia is close and very suitable for small children. We have 4 swings and a small merry-go-round and can provide a cot for babies.
Disabled access
It is possible to access the property by wheelchair but unfortunately it is not easy.
how this holiday makes a difference

The estate is run in a way that is as friendly for the environment as possible: we use environmentally friendly products, we separate our garbage, use sustainable energy sources and recycled and natural building materials.
We have an organic vegetable and herb garden and several orchards. Our main target is to be as self supporting and "grounded" as possible. We are also a Wwoof host (Willing Workers on Organic Farms) and receive people from all over the world who help us in exchange for board and lodging. We are in the process of organizing workshops (meditation, art ("art in residence"), craftsmanship) also conducted by local people. We are planning to serve an educational purpose by inviting groups of (less advantaged) children to give them a 'break' and offer the opportunity to experience small scale organic farming, sustainability, etc.Guests from all over the world can come into contact with our activities and sustainable way of living and take home their experiences. The recycling of building materials and use of waste building materials or natural materials can be seen in all our construction processes (we use doors, windows, marble, wood, iron, stones, clay). E.g. our veranda is made out of rafters of an old railway station, we built a house out of clay and stones from our own land, our terrace is composed with waste marble of the marble factory in Odiaxere, and we use stones from our property to build walls and terraces. We are building an ecological campsite where all waste water is cleaned by plants and goes into a pond which will attract birds and other wildlife making our Algarve holiday accommodation a haven for wildlife. The sustainable energy sources we use now are sun and wood (solar panels and wood burners for hot water and central heating). In addition to this we would like to install a wind mill when possible. In winter 2005 we will start collecting waste oil from restaurants and recycle it into bio-diesel which will enable us to produce our own 100% clean energy. We will try to trade this bio-diesel with local farmers. On our land we have almonds, figs, olives, oranges and other fruit. Next season we will also provide guests with organic vegetables (we are already providing herbs). We give guests information on where to eat, where to do their shopping and about things to do. In this information we promote local establishments, markets, small scale organisations and cultural events. In our workshops we will give full attention to local, traditional craftsmanship (making traditional Portuguese tiles: azulejos, cabinet making, basket weaving, refining honey etc). The Quinta is a perfect point of departure for walking and hiking in the Algarve: in the Serra de Monchique, along the beautiful South- and West coast, or, more land inward in the Nature Resort of the Calderao. Maps and information are available on the spot. |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've lead the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
