introduction to Honeymoon to Turkey, Watermill
A small hotel, lovingly restored from an old watermill with swimming pool and exceptional food.
Several years ago, German born Brigitte and her Turkish husband Ferruh, had a vision of restoring an old watermill whose remains lay hidden on the mountainside. They succeeded so well that it is hard to feel that this secret, peaceful place has not been here forever. Stone buildings, including the old mill itself, climb the slopes, connected by small paths and flights of steps. Rooms are scattered about on different levels, half hidden in the abundance of trees and climbers, while shaded seating areas with divans and low cushions permit privacy and peace.
But there is more to this accommodation than its wonderful setting. Completely in harmony with its surroundings, a swimming pool is fed by a mountain spring and fresh drinking water comes from the source that once fed the mill. Brigitte is a first-rate cook and produces a six-course dinner every night. Food is mostly organic: eggs come from the village, meat, fish and bread are all local, dried herbs are Brigitte’s own. Home-made marmalade and preserves appear at breakfast and guests can enjoy her organic wines with evening meals.
A stay at our watermill is an immensely restorative experience. Outside pressures fade away; there is no hurry and no noise here apart from trickling water, birds and cicadas.
Please note: Based on return flights from the UK - supplements / reductions may be applicable depending on flight & class availability at time of booking.
Beach (15 mins drive) Shops and restaurants (10 mins drive) Walking - situated at the foot of the watermill is The Lycian Way, a 509 km way-marked footpath around the coast of Lycia, from Fethiye to Antalya.

how this holiday makes a difference

A former working watermill now restored into a small hotel by Brigitte - a fervent believer in sustainable tourism. Set 1200ft above sea level, overlooking the spectacular Butterfly Gorge, the restoration was quite a feat, due to the location. There was no access road and everything needed for the restoration had to be transported by camels and donkeys. Only locally sourced natural materials and local craftsmen have been used throughout the restoration and building. The swimming pool is fed by the mountain spring and is designed on green principles, totally chemical free. Drinking water is also drawn from this source and provided in recycled bottles.
Fresh organic produce is used in creating all meals and includes home baked bread, muesli, eggs, cheese, butter, honey and preserves for breakfast. The huge, ancient vines that provide dense shading on all the terraces are used for the organic wine which can be enjoyed with the 6 course evening meal. Brigitte also produces and sells cold press organic olive oil, herbs, spices and pekmez a delicious grape molasses and tahin syrup.
Situated at the foot of the watermill is The Lycian way is a 509 km way-marked footpath around the coast of Lycia in southern Turkey, from Fethiye to Antalya . Lycia is the historical name of the Tekke Peninsula, which juts into the Mediterranean on Turkey's southern coast. The mountains rise steeply from the wooded shore and tiny bays, giving beautiful views and varied walking and the highlight of the walk is the stunning descent to Faralya, above the cliffs of Butterfly Valley. Supporting conservation- Butterfly Valley is now protected as a first class SIT or Grade A priority area and a school is being planned to teach local people about the flora and fauna and how protect it. It will also conduct research and support ecologic farming in nearby areas. Visitors will be encouraged to participate volunteer and demonstrate that tourism can sometimes help preserve, not destroy, natural beauty. A financial contribution is made per passenger booked to local conservation charities, and we also encourage our customers to offset the carbon emissions of their flights. |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
