introduction to Tuscany self catering accommodation
Tuscany self catering accommodation. Abandoned for 20 years the self catering farmhouse was restored in 2003 to provide an idyllic accommodation in which to relax in Tuscany. The accommodation sits in 25 acres of mixed pasture and woodland with sensational views over the Serchio valley.
Wildlife is abundant, from the eagles soaring on the thermals to the deer and wild boar in the forest. A network of paths lead to hilltop villages where restaurants provide hearty local fare.
The farmhouse has been sensitively upgraded to provide comfortable self catering accomodation in Tuscany for 10 people (5 bedrooms).
Whilst retaining the character of a Tuscan farmhouse with its chestnut beams and antique furniture, the accommodation is well equipped with modern appliances and set up for self catering. The apartment in the rebuilt barn for 4 - 6 people (2 bedrooms) was built with an eye for space and light - the views are glorious and the rooms light and airy.
The swimming pool is the hub of much activity at our farmhouse accommodation, but our woodlands also offer shady walks and the Col is a space for quiet contemplation. A spa pool beside the apartment can ease aches and pains and a working Pizza oven ensures that hunger is kept at bay. There are 3 terraces for al fresco eating and entertaining. Food is a highlight of any visit - organic produce is available in season and why not take advantage of having a resident chef and have a candle-lit dinner cooked for you and served on the terrace? For the best Tuscany self catering accommodation, look no further.
* Full board: Picnic lunch (x5), afternoon tea, 3 course dinner with wine (x6).
**Full board: Picnic lunch (x3), afternoon tea, 3 course dinner with wine (x4)
Please note: Breakfasts only provided on the days off. We can recommend local restaurants.
Minimum 4 people for walking holidays. Fully inclusive: all meals, transport (incl. airport pick-up), guided walks and use of facilities at Lavacchio. (Prices per person)
The walks are all based in the Appenines or the Apuane Alps and start within an hour's drive of the house. The level of difficulty can be adapted to suit the fitness and enthusiasm of the participants. There are many low level mule tracks which take you from village to village, ensuring a safe and sheltered route. Alternatively, there are treks which require a reasonable head for heights (though no ropes).
Skiing is based in Abetone, the best known of the Tuscan resorts and one which holds its snow well. It takes 75 minutes to reach Abetone from the house. In 2005 we skied in November and when the Alps looked bare in January 06 we had 2 metres of snow. The resort is good for a competent intermediate skier and there is a little challenging off-piste skiing.
Both activities are obviously weather dependent. We will offer alternatives such as trips to local cave systems, wine and olive oil tasting should these not be available.
Train: The nearest train station, Barga/Gallicano is 4km away.
Car: The accommodation is 40km north of Lucca above the town of Gallicano, opposite Barga. 2km from Molazzana through the hamlet of Promiana, the farmhouse is at the end of a 500m track.

how this holiday makes a difference
Our aims are to provide top quality Tuscany self catering accommodation in a beautiful setting, a peaceful environment and with a level of personal service to make your Tuscany holiday relaxing and memorable. All of this is done with an awareness of the balance which must be maintained with the world around us. Every effort is made to reduce the harmful effects on the environment through the use of sustainable fuel and solar energy and to produce food of the highest quality using only what nature intended. Local Tuscan services are recommended and they benefit hugely from the input of sensitive and responsible holidaymakers.Self catering guests are encouraged to visit local producers in Tuscany: cheese makers in Castelnuovo, olive groves in the Lucca hills and wineries at Monte Carlo (Lucca) – all small scale practices using traditional methods. Local restaurants abound and benefit from our guests’ patronage thereby aiding local employment. We point out traditional Tuscany food suppliers rather than supermarkets. Ailsa is a trained chef who will produce gourmet meals from organic produce and local suppliers according to the guiding principles of the Slow Food Association. Where necessary we employ workers from the village to help with maintenance or to clean the accommodation. Local tradesmen built the properties using traditional materials, many of them recycled. |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
