description
We have a 1,100 acre organic agricultural estate and cultural center near Siena, part of the Riserva Naturale Alto Merse, and a unique historical property and multicultural community. We offer B&B and self catering accommodation in Tuscany- the estate produces organic wine, olive oil, vegetables, fruit, honey, grains, and pasta, and serves dinner nightly to residents and guests if desired.
Located 1 hr from Florence and 45 mins from San Gimignano, this is an ideal base for exploring Tuscany. Or stay on the property and relax by the pool, take a hike, or read on the terrace.
Casa del Fantino , from €560 - €1120 per week, depending on season (available
year round), s/c
Casa del Fantino (sleeps 4) is a cozy house (with central gas heating), located in the main Castello courtyard, near the swimming pool, guest office and shop, and dining room. The house is adjacent to Casa Dami. There are 2 bedrooms, one with an extra sleeping loft, a spacious bathroom with a full tub/shower and a washing machine, and a small reading nook perfect for curling up with a good book. The fireplace in the kitchen/dining area provides warmth and a cozy atmosphere on colder nights. In the warmer months, most guests eat outside under the attached pergola covered with white Trebbiano grapes. The kitchen is stocked with all the items needed to make and serve meals.
Casetta al Leccio , from €980 - €1260 per week, depending on season (available Apr - Oct), s/c
Casetta al Leccio (sleeps 4-5) gets its name from the enormous oak (leccio in Italian) tree that towers over the western corner of this little farmhouse nestled among the grain fields. The lovely ancient tree provides shade in the summer and protection from wind during the spring and fall. Located on a hillside covered with grain and barley, Casetta al Leccio has a terrific view of the Castello on the opposite hill, and offers a glimpse of Siena through a notch in the Montagnola Senese hills. A pergola covered with roses in the early summer provides a wonderful place to dine al fresco, with views of the grain fields, the cherry trees, and a large rosemary bush that perfumes the air.
Inside, a kitchen with a pantry, the dining room, and the living room with a fireplace make up the first floor of the house. The second floor houses the bathroom, with a full tub/shower and washing machine, a bedroom with two twin beds and a view of the fields, shaded by the oak tree, and a large master bedroom with a double bed and a view towards the Elsa River valley. There is also a small room outside the master bedroom that can be used as a study or to house an additional guest, if extra space is needed. The house has woodstoves, and the kitchen is stocked with all the items needed to make and serve meals.
Palazze Logge , from €980 - €1260 per week, depending on season (available Apr - Oct), s/c
Palazze Logge (sleeps 4) takes its name from the covered porch with two large arches that runs along the front of the house providing a fabulous view of the Castello across the valley. Palazze Logge is a special favorite with our more artistic guests. The unusually high ceilings and abundant natural light in this house, along with the large covered porch, appeal to anyone interested in exercising their creative impulses. The view from both bedrooms, stretching across a portion of our olive and fruit orchards, and down the Elsa valley towards Casole Val D’Elsa provides ample inspiration for landscape painters in any medium.
The bathroom, with a full tub/shower, looks out across the oldest section the vineyard. The large living room has a fireplace and cozy furniture for relaxing inside when the weather is not cooperating enough to stay outside on the porch, but most people find they are drawn to spend most of their time on the porch. Palazze Logge also has a secluded terrace behind the house, overlooking the Elsa valley, next to a lovely old fig tree that bears delicious fruit in the late summer. The washing machine is located on the first floor in a section of the original stables that was renovated to house the utilities. The house has woodstoves and a fireplace and the eat-in kitchen is stocked with all the items needed to make and serve meals.
Montecchino , from €650 – €1400 per week, depending on season (available year round), s/c Montecchino (sleeps 4) is a lovely retreat for guests seeking a more secluded and quiet vacation. Tucked into the wooded hillside leading to the pastures at Le Vene, this cozy farmhouse has plenty of space both inside and outside the house for enjoying a quiet getaway. All the rooms are on one level, which makes access easier than some of our other houses.
The living room is cozy and has couches, and a desk for planning excursions around the Tuscan countryside. One bedroom, with 2 twin beds looks out at the forested hillside between the sheep pasture and the house. The other bedroom, which has 2 twin beds and a bathroom with shower ensuite, looks out over the pastures of Le Vene, where our white Calvana cows graze all summer. There is an additional full bathroom with tub/shower outside the first bedroom. The main room features a sitting area in front of the fireplace, a dining area, a door to the pergola, and the kitchen.
The pergola is our guests’ favorite thing about Montecchino - a full grape arbor built around a large stone dining table, the pergola provides shade in the summer and a natural windbreak - making dining outside at Montecchino an experience to remember. The house has a natural gas furnace and a fireplace and the kitchen is stocked with all the items needed to make and serve meals.
Family friendly: Yes, while we do not offer specific activities for children, we find that it is an ideal location for families, due to the safety of the location, the varied outdoor activities, and ample space available in our accommodations. Kids love see our pigs, chickens, cows, sheep, and ponies, and we also have many hiking trails and a pool. We offer cribs for people with infants under the age of three.
The estate is located 4 km southwest of Rosia near the intersection of SS 541 and SS 73, about 20 minutes south of Siena . The nearest airport is Florence (1 hour).

how this holiday makes a difference
|
At our self catering accommodation in Tuscany we are committed to being a good steward of the land and the surrounding community. By farming organically, recycling, using renewable resources for utility needs when possible, and encouraging our guests to be conscious of their resource usage, we protect our land from non-sustainable use.
By supporting local artisanal producers, providing a supportive workplace for our employees, and encouraging our guests to be sensitive to local culture, and opening our property for public use on hiking trails, we benefit the local community in many ways that traditional hotels are not able to. We aspire to be a vacation destination that provides an opportunity for guests to be engaged, to participate in our community, to learn about sustainability, and take that knowledge home and apply it to their own community. Guests staying in these four-person self catering farmhouses will appreciate the simple feel provided by our efforts at authentic restoration of original Tuscan farmstead homes. Using traditional masonry techniques and recycled materials and wood harvested sustainably from the property, we have updated each house with its own character and ambience. Because the peaceful tranquility of the countryside is one of Tuscany’s most valuable resources, you will not find unnecessary appliances, or entertainment technology – guests save energy and restore their senses by spending time watching the sunset on the terrace, reading under an oak tree, or talking with friends and family members. Each house also has a small traditional organic herb garden, full of lavender, rosemary, sage, basil, and other culinary accoutrements. All our houses provide idyllic self catering accommodation in Tuscany. A quick trip to the store will bring olive oil, pasta, and garlic – a recipe for a perfect Tuscan pasta – that’s all organic! |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
