description
Our accommodation in the Aggtelek National Park provides an ideal base for families and small groups to explore the delights of Hungary’s Northern Uplands. To help you, we have hire bikes and tandems, dedicated maps for walkers and cyclists of all fitness levels and abilities, and sound local knowledge.

We are located in the Aggtelek National Park, a protected area characterised by rolling hills of 160-600 metre altitudes. More than three-quarters of the area is forested, though the park is most well known for its network of caves, which stretch across the border into Slovakia and give the surrounding landscape such an unusual diversity.

There is a rare abundance of wildlife to be discovered here too, from indigenous wildflowers to butterflies and bird life. In recent decades, small populations of wolf and lynx have re-established themselves, yet they remain a rarer sight than even the elusive wild boar.

It is for these reasons that the Aggtelek National Park is a Biosphere Reserve and a World Heritage Site, as well as a super place to enjoy a memorable and relaxing holiday.
travellers' tales
An air of relaxation greeted us as soon as we entered the cottage and stayed with us throughout the holiday. Every day was made all the more pleasant by the wonderful butterflies we found on our outings and every evening by the many moths that beautified the bathroom walls. (more)
rooms, food and facilities
Two double bedrooms, fully-fitted kitchen (gas cooker, fridge), shower room, WC, wood-burning stoves, dining room, children’s swing, barbecue and outdoor dining area, large garden with plum and walnut trees and an outdoor composting toilet. There is also a bread maker, blender, TV, DVD, CD/radio with selection of CDs, DVDs, maps and books.

Disabled access : currently a short flight of three steps to the metre-wide entrance to the cottage, and a regular-size shower closet, means we cannot state that the property has disabled access; however, we plan to renovate a third guest room later this year, with provision for wheelchair users.

Family Friendly : the property’s size (two bedrooms and six beds) and its location surrounded by quiet roads, bountiful wildlife and a National Park programme that promotes child-friendly activities (from eco-trail walks to candle-, felt- and bread-making workshops) make it eminently suitable for families and small groups. We have mapped out walks and short bike rides specifically with families in mind, and we have the bikes, equipment and experience to help and guide them if necessary. We can also introduce children to families of farmyard animals that they may well be eating during their stay!

Organic produce: We grow a variety of salad, herbs and vegetables each year, from rocket, basil and tomatoes to squashes, paprika, potatoes and other veg. We also supplement what we grow in the guesthouse garden with produce from the village which is also grown pesticide-free. We have grape vines, apple, plum, walnut and apricot trees, and can provide meat, eggs and cheese from the local organic farm. The surrounding woodland is also a prime spot for wild mushrooms.

Biking accommodation: For cyclists there is on-site storage, bio-degradeable bike cleaning detergent, lube and a hose etc, should they want it. If we supply the bikes, then of course they are cleaned and oiled beforehand.

Baby friendly : Cot and bicycle child seats are available.

    how to find us

We are located in Tornaszentandrás, in the Aggtelek National Park in north-east Hungary. This village is close to the border with Slovakia and 60km north of Miskolc, Hungary’s third largest city. Nearest airport is Kosice (Slovakia), 60km away, which is reachable by a 45-minute flight from Bratislava. Budapest’s Ferihegy airport is next closest, at 200km. From the capital, several trains a day leave from Budapest Keleti station to Miskolc. From here, a connecting train to Tornanádaska stops just a few kilometres from the cottage.
  • how this holiday makes a difference
The guesthouse uses organic cotton bed linen and towels and we can supply organic food grown or reared in the village. We strive to minimise waste through on-site recycling and employ local help where necessary.

We provide a welcome hamper of seasonal, local produce to all our guests, and have hire bicycles and tandems on hand, together with dedicated route maps to help you explore the environment.

All furniture and some soft furnishings have been bought locally. All of them are used and/or reconditioned items. Details for local transport (buses and trains) are provided to help guests move around the parkland, together with details of activities in the park which are run by local guides and crafts people.

I pay fair prices for any goods or work required by the business and look to employ and promote traditional skills. I look to support appropriate technology in any future developments concerning the guesthouse, and operate the business with transparency.

Finally, we are a member of 1% for the planet and voluntarily donate a portion of our annual revenue to grass-roots environmental concerns.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
