introduction to Maun
The lodge lies at the edge of Maun, along the Shorobe road, which leads to the Moremi Game Reserve in the Okavango Delta, Botswana.
Maun, once a frontier town for daring entrepreneurs, is now a bustling place where you can buy almost everything and can enjoy a visit to the local markets and curio shops, the museum, the wildlife educational park, cultural tour to a nearby village or a guided bird walk along the Thamalakane River - one of the outflows of the Okavango Delta.
Due to the unique biodiversity and incredible bird life the Okavango attracts visitors from all over the world. Generally these visitors fly straight out into a lodge in the delta without ever really touching ground in Maun. For the few who do, our lodge has become an unforgettable experience.
Situated just off the main road overlooking one of the floodplains, the lodge has the feeling of being in the bush. The eight thatched en-suite roundavels blend into the surrounding and are placed in a semi circle, creating the impression of a small village, with the ‘kgotla’ (traditionally the main meeting area) in the centre. In our case, the meeting centre is a round breezy bar that encourages great conversations over a cold drink. If you like more privacy you could leave the bar for the cosy beer garden or overlook the pool whilst enjoying an intimate dinner from our international kitchen. If you would rather enjoy our fabulous food inside, we also have a restaurant with a majestic view.

How to find us:
From the Maun Airport you take a 10 minute ride along the main road towards Shorobe (Moremi Game Reserve). You travel for 8 kilometres until you find a sign on the left hand side (before you cross the Matlapaneng bridge). This turn takes you about 300 metres over a well maintained dirt road to the lodge.
From Ghanzi it is a 3 hour journey to Maun. In Maun, keep following the main road and drive exactly as described above.
From Nata it is also a 3 hour journey to Maun. As you get into Maun, you turn at the first T-junction to the left, then right at the roundabout. This takes you to the main road and you drive as described above.
how this holiday makes a difference
|
The lodge started as a local initiative by a Motswana Lady born in Maun. The lodge is 100% locally owned and only employs local people. The senior staff (chef cook, barman, waiter, receptionist) is qualified; the other staff has been recruited from the immediate village. All our staff receive ongoing training and are sent to job specific hospitality courses – not only to serve our guests to expected standards, but also to understand the nature of the tourism business.
We advertise through the Maun Animal Welfare Centre and support local initiatives like street kids, soup kitchen and anti aids campaigns, where possible. The local neighbours are encouraged to watch the evening news or sometimes local sport events on our Tv in the bar between 5 and 7 pm. This time allows for interaction between the local community members (ranging from the station commander to the bank manager to the local shop owner and the neighbour) and our clients. This interaction is often not only to great benefit of the local community, but has also proven to be very interesting and enjoyable for or guests. The two European Advisors to this project (a community development consultant and financial advisor and a builder/carpenter/electrician/cook) are of great value to the training of the staff. These Advisors ensure that the standards of hygiene, cleanliness and friendliness that have been set are maintained and thus the quality of the product is guaranteed to the client at all times. |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
