description
Centrally located between Mount Kenya and six national parks: This lodge, openend in 2005 under Dutch management, is your comfortable home-base.

Significant places of interest: within a 2 to 60 kilometre range (Samburu National Park (20 km), Buffalo Springs (8 km), Shaba National Park (15 km), Lewa Downs Conservancy (20 km), Meru National Park (30 km), Bisanadi National park (30 km), Mount Kenya (50 km). We offer one stopover with several possibilities. It is the ideal place for environmentally orientated tourists who wish to see as much as possible without having to spend days in a mini-bus.

The accommodation consists of seven comfortable African style lodges complete with grass roof. They are constructed with local stone and locally produced woodwork. The lodges are situated on a quiet, tranquil property of 5 hectares. Each lodge has its own en-suite bathroom and dressing room. There is a choice of single, double room or family lodges.

The large swimming pool is a distinguishing feature of the lodge. After an exhilarating day you can return to the lodge and enjoy a refreshing drink on the shady terrace. The restaurant offers wonderful meals to be enjoyed either indoors or on the veranda. All ingredients are home grown. Vegetables come straight from the kitchen garden, bread and pastries from the bakery, chickens from the chicken run and meat from our own butcher. Water comes from a well on the property and a purification system produces top quality water.

We offer package tours or custom-made safaris and excursions. We are a community-based project; profits are for the benefit of the local community. This means that there is easy access to the local culture of the Borana people.

  • how this holiday makes a difference
This lodge is a community-based project. This means that it is set up for the purpose of improving the living standards of the local people and for realizing initiatives based on micro credit. We have 16 employees from the local community which means 250 people benefit.

Through various activities and generous donations we have been able to realise several projects including the sinking of a well with pump and purification system. Availability of fresh water meant that the Borana people could settle and they have since cultivated 5 hectares of land.

Lots of the Borana children go to a school that is located near our lodge. The construction of this school is terrible; it has no floor and the walls are in desperate conditions. At this moment there a fundraise campaign in the Netherlands to build a new school. We have already collected a reasonable amount of money but certainly more is needed.

Our lodge operates on an eco-friendly basis and supports the principles of sustainable tourism and ecotourism; environment and cultural orientated travel. Products used in the kitchen are either grown in our own garden or obtained from trusted suppliers, and waste is made into compost.

Pool, Isiolo lodge accommodation, Northern KenyaThe pool uses water from our own well which has mineral qualities. The filter system sees to recycling of the water, therefore there is no unnecessary stress on the ground water level. Wastewater is purified in septic tanks before being returned to the ground.

In building of the complex natural local materials were used; hundreds of trees of been planted to compensate for the use of timber in the construction of the hotel.

Community based tourismThis holiday is part of the responsibletravel.com and Conservation International Community Based Tourism Programme to support and promote community based tourism ventures that offer significant conservation and development benefits to local communities. Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
