Dominican Republic ecolodge accommodation

country:Dominican Republic
location:Pedro Sanchez, Region El Seybo
price:From US $15 per person per night. Tour prices below

description
Beside offering accommodation in a lovely wooden ranchito, our ecolodge also organizes day tours to caves, waterfalls and other natural attractions with local guides in small groups.

Come and join us for our day trips when visiting the East of the Dominican Republic.

With a wide range of eco-activities, we'll show you the beautiful countryside. You can plan a tour to a stunning waterfall or one of the many caves in the region.

Or you may prefer horseriding to the "Marlboro" waterfall. Or perhaps you fancy the chance to discover an old gold mine near Miches!

In Pedro Sanchez, a small welcoming village between El Seybo and Miches, you'll meet the local people and learn about their lifestyle, their culture and their traditions. You will eat well and sleep well in one of our small wooden eco-lodges, all for a favourable price! We'll minimize the time spent in a vehicle, and spend it on exploring nature, adventure and relaxation.

Our day tours in the East of the Dominican Republic are for active people with a reasonable level of fitness and interest in outdoor activities. If you like to walk, run, hike, paddle, cycle, or go to the gym, you'll love our trips. You don't need to be a triathlete though!

rooms, food and facilities
Our eco-lodges are simple, but they offer everything you will need in order to relax and sleep well after the day's activities. You will stay in the typical houses of the indigenous people ("sky-blue Ranchitos"), which are made from natural materials (wood) and offer shelter against the elements. We also have a cafeteria with a terrace, 2 bathrooms, parking, drinking water and electricity 110V.

Our menu stretches from typical local Dominican Food to "Comida Criollo" (Caribbean style) and fully international cuisine. We can cater for vegetarians and other dietary requirements.

Our breakfasts usually consist of coffee and juice, fruit, toast, eggs, etc, but if you want, we can also whip up a pancake for you, or prepare some scrambled eggs! Our lunches are mostly "picnic-style", or we have a BBQ at a specific destination! Dinners cover a range of styles.

Family friendly: This accommodation is very family friendly -  we have an open-air restaurant. Nature around is the playground and there are always local children present as well.
how to find us

how this holiday makes a difference
The project uses both extensive community involvement and an enterprise/private sector approach. It directly links the local community’s economic improvement with the conservation of natural resources (“ecological corridor”). Sustainable ecotourism is suited to alleviate poverty in this region of the Dominican Republic by simultaneously protecting the environment.

We run an authentic eco-project, with intense community cooperation and benefits. We create awareness of nature conservation among local people and cooperate with the local "Association for the Development of Pedro Sanchez". We focus on sustainable ecotourism, participation of villagers and improvement of economic well-being. We outsource our services and activities (horse rental, laundry, lodging, small bus transportation, local souvenir production and sales, etc), and are establishing a complete eco-centre with eco-lodges, restaurant and eco-shop.

We also cooperate among regional tourism enterprises to improve quality of existing tourism in the East, employing local people (e.g. as guides, helpers, waiters). This eco-project spreads most of the benefits among poor local peoples. Community work is done by volunteers, teaching the villagers about ecotourism and nature conservation and how they can engage in it.

Nature conservation and biodiversity protection is also part of our authentic ecotourism project. Together with the first tour guides, we have started a written inventory of birds in the area, their habitat, those endangered and why. This work will be continued with other less known animal species, and we are also looking for biology student interns and assistance from specialists available in the Capital’s university.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
