description
The "Woodsman's cabin" provides the perfect antidote to anyone with a busy, stressful life. Its peaceful and beautiful setting immediately soothes the soul and provides the perfect combination of the back to nature experience and modern comforts. The cabin has no electricity so lighting is provided by candles, solar lamps and oil lamps. It has a fully equipped kitchen with gas cooker & fridge. There is a shower/WC. Heating is provided by a woodburning stove. The whole ethos of the cabin is to provide a welcome retreat with minimal impact to the environment.
Bikes are available for hire (£25 per bike, per week) and you can make the most of the miles of pathways to local shops and villages. Maps and directions are provided. There are local shops and restaurants to be explored and the weekly market which is well reknowned and certainly worth a visit. The local produce is of a very high quality and tastes fantastic. There are many local businesses who value visits from tourists.
Birdwatching, natural flora and fauna are all on your doorstep, we provide guidebooks on what you might see. In the lake there are fish and frogs, you can take the boat out and paddle around the little island, or lay on the raft and sunbathe. You're free to do as much or as little as you like.
Ecologically, the cabin has a low carbon impact. Waste is recycled, water is used sparingly and only eco friendly cleaning products are used. Fuel for the fire is gathered from the surrounding forest. You can offset your carbon emissions if you fly here by planting a tree in the woods. We look forward to welcoming you soon!

The woodsman's cabin has a low carbon impact on the environment, it has no electricity supply which really makes you think about what you need to use and when. It has some solar lighting as well as candles. We have a system for recycling waste which is collected by our local commune. Organic waste is composted and used on our garden.
Water is provided by the source which is ultimately supplied by rain water so its in our own interests to use it efficiently. The water is raised using a wind-pump and stored in a large tank behind the cabin. The water passes through three different filters before entering the cabin. Visitors to the cabin are given written info on saving water. By providing bike hire, we are encouraging visitors to make the most of the local shops, restaurants and businesses. We provide written info on local business and events. Any money spent here helps to strengthen the local community. We shop locally ourselves when we can and all materials and stocks for the cabin are purchased through our local network of suppliers. Much of the cabin has been built and furnished with second hand materials, ie the roof tiles were salvaged from a tumbledown barn, and the timber was coppiced locally. The woodland surrounding the cabin is a haven for wildlife as it's quiet and remains generally undisturbed. Guide books are provided on what visitors might expect to see. Our ethos is to provide visitors with a unique value for money experience that doesn't cost the earth. |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
