description
Set on the banks of it's own little lake in peaceful woodland this little off grid cabin provides the perfect combination of a back to nature experience, whilst using alternative energies to provide some basic mod cons. The cabin is well equipped with everything you'd need for a go-glamping get-away-from-it-all holiday. Our whole ethos is to provide a welcome retreat from modern day stresses with minimal impact on the environment.
travellers' tales
The fairy-tale cabin, forest and very own lake, the walks and bike rides on a crystal clear, lake (and cow) dotted hilly landscape and charming little villages, feeding our lake tame carps (cuter than Nemo!)... were the most memorable parts. (more)
rooms, food and facilities
The cabin is open plan downstairs, with comfy seating area, a woodburning stove that keeps the cabin really toasty and heats water for the shower in conjuction with our solar collector. There's also a well equipped kitchen dining area with gas oven & fridge. We provide lots of extras so you can travel light such as some basic provisions, a few toiletries, bedding & towels as well as a 'shop in a box' for if you arrive after the shops have closed. Upstairs there's a double bedroom, simply furnished with views out over the lake. Outside there is a showeroom with composting loo. There's a spacious deck with wood-fired cooking range for al fresco dining and also a campfire style BBQ. Down by the lake is a raft and a little boat, perfect for paddling around the island. There are also artist's materials, board games, a small but eclectic library including guide books to local flora & fauna, and even a wind-up gramaphone! Bike hire is available.
special things to do and see here
Go for a cycle or walk along the quiet country lanes or one of the many well marked off-road tracks. Birds, wild flowers, mushrooms (in season) are all on your doorstep so it's ideal for photography. There's a fabulous weekly market in the local town, or just relax by drifting on the raft listening to the frog's chorus and the fish jumping. how to find us
The cabin is situated about 5km from the market town of Piegut-Pluviers in Dordogne, SW France. By train via Eurostar to Paris or Lille and then TGV to Angouleme. Fly to Angouleme from Stansted or to Limoges from several UK airports. Transfers are avaialable at extra cost.how this holiday makes a difference

The woodsman's cabin has a low carbon impact on the environment, it has no electricity supply which really makes you think about what you need to use and when. It has some solar lighting as well as candles. We have a system for recycling waste which is collected by our local commune. Organic waste is composted and used on our garden.
Water is provided by the source which is ultimately supplied by rain water so its in our own interests to use it efficiently. The water is raised using a wind-pump and stored in a large tank behind the cabin. The water passes through three different filters before entering the cabin. Visitors to the cabin are given written info on saving water. By providing bike hire, we are encouraging visitors to make the most of the local shops, restaurants and businesses. We provide written info on local business and events. Any money spent here helps to strengthen the local community. We shop locally ourselves when we can and all materials and stocks for the cabin are purchased through our local network of suppliers. Much of the cabin has been built and furnished with second hand materials, ie the roof tiles were salvaged from a tumbledown barn, and the timber was coppiced locally. The woodland surrounding the cabin is a haven for wildlife as it's quiet and remains generally undisturbed. Guide books are provided on what visitors might expect to see. Our ethos is to provide visitors with a unique value for money experience that doesn't cost the earth. |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
