This mountain eco lodge for nature lovers is located at 700m on the slopes of Mt Batukaru in central Bali, 2hrs from Denpasar airport. You will have spectacular views from your balcony to southern Bali and the mountain, with protected rainforest just 10 minutes away!
Surrounded by lush tropical "food forests" of cacao, coffee, coconuts, vanilla and jungle fruits, the climate is mild and moist. There are sweet scents and exotic flowers, plus more than 80 useful and/or edible plants in the extensive organic gardens.
You will stay in beautiful bungalows, hand crafted from natural materials with balconies, views and plenty of birdlife! We offer a private and intimate service from our local staff with a maximum of 10 guests at one time. We serve traditional local dishes produced from our organic gardens.
Families are welcome and children love the freedom and chance to be in nature - a safe natural environment for children 5 years and up.

Guided routes include a "food forest walk" where you will see cocoa, vanilla, coffee and many other tropical fruits, walks to local villages, rice paddies & temples, day treks in the largest rainforest in Bali and the more demanding trek to the summit of Mt. Batukaru (a full day trip,1 days notice required.)

how this holiday makes a difference
Linda manages the Eco Lodge and has taught Environmental studies at an International school in Bali for 5 years and has studied organic farming & Permaculture. Norm is a professional Permaculturist & Environmental management consultant, who has spent the last 2 years in Aceh working with government agencies since the 2004 Tsunami. For 15 years they have actively lobbied the local community to preserve and value their natural resources. 15 years ago when they built their first house, there were few birds in the area, now every year we see bird numbers increase and new species appear. We have worked with our local community establishing a no catching bird policy. We recently brokered a community agreement to preserve 800 hectares of local rainforest, they have the highest eco-rating in the Natural Guide to Bali, and have received the 2007 Wild Asia Best Eco Lodge Award in South East Asia for Responsible Tourism. We employ only local staff and are committed to improving their skills while supporting their cultural and religious beliefs, providing alternative employment to farming families especially in times of financial stress. On average 8 local men have been employed full time constructing our most recent building project over 16 months. Our buildings are low impact Balinese style, with extensive use of local natural materials. We have also directly employed 8 locals in our lodge, mainly young married women and have developed Eco tourism activities such as guiding treks & developing workshops enabling 20 local men and women to improve their family income. We have raised $35.000 over the last 3 years through AUSAID & Seacology grants to benefit our community in sustainable Eco Tourism and social projects. We are committed to demonstrating non-chemical farming & sustainable waste management. All organic wastes are composted, sewage and waste water are treated by waste water gardens. We have a communal, gravity-fed water supply system and recycle where possible. Pest control is entirely non-chemical and fruit, vegetables and herbs are grown in the extensive lodge gardens. All house keeping is chemical free and we use natural soaps in the rooms |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
