description
Situated in Huaraz, in a valley dominated by the dramatic mountain ranges of the Cordillera Blanca and Cordillera Negra, this centre was developed in 2005 as a place where travellers and locals could come together and share and celebrate cultural diversity.

The centre’s main aim is to provide educational tools that help tourists travel in a more respectful and responsible way. It is probably the only hostel of Huaraz run by ‘campesinos’, people from the mountain communities. Community members have invested much time and effort in this project; the work of the weavers from the centre’s demonstration site and handicrafts store decorates the rooms, and the garden is filled with native plants, flowers and birds.

Hammocks and couches encourage visitors to relax and enjoy the sun. Stroll through the garden or sleep in one of the beautiful rooms and you will feel, see and smell their effort!

special things to do and see here

The centre supports a number of offshoot community projects allowing you to enjoy homestays, guided walks, traditional cooking, local crafts, and long hikes to lakes and glaciers, while at the same time helping to protect the natural and cultural heritage of Peru.
rooms, food and facilities
Bedroom at community hostel in Peru We have four rooms with private bathroom and two rooms without private bathroom. All rooms are decorated with weavings by the members of Huaripampa. All the bathrooms have showers and warm water 24 hours a day.

The kitchen is accessible to all visitors staying at the hostel. In high season, breakfast, lunch and dinner is prepared at affordable prices for visitors who request it. Those who wish to cook for themselves are welcome to use our facilities. There is also a beautiful garden, education room, information office, weaver’s demonstration shop, and internet connection (for laptops).

how to find us

Fly to Lima. From Lima, there are daily buses (several levels of luxury) to Huaraz. The trip takes seven to eight hours. You can then take a short taxi ride from Huarez to the centre.
how this holiday makes a difference
We provide a sustainable source of income for the local community creating funds to support local schools and conservation efforts.

Local children at community hostel in Peru Our education room provides information about responsible tourism, community-based sustainable tourism, and local cultures of our project areas. Advice is given on how to travel more responsibly.

We are supporting offshoot community based tourism projects by coordinating bookings and training community members. Project members have re-gained pride in their culture. Through tourism they realize that their language, clothes, music, and traditions are special and should be respected and conserved. Previously they were embarrassed by their ancestry.

This holiday is part of the responsibletravel.com and Conservation International Community Based Tourism Programme to support and promote community based tourism ventures that offer significant conservation and development benefits to local communities. Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've lead the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
