how this holiday makes a difference
The Yorkshire Dales self catering accommodation: These lodges will create awareness that a sustainable holiday lodge development can be built and operated with minimal effect on the natural landscape and can provide valuable financial support to a dying market town. During the development of the site we removed wooden fencing, barbed wire, bracken and alien plant species to allow the natural environment to return to its original state. We aim to create awareness through marketing, PR and word of mouth that people can enjoy a sustainable countryside/rural holiday experience but still support the local community and enjoy the luxuries of state of the art and contemporary interiors within the UK.

There is a commitment to eco-principles rather than traditional building methods so that the Yorkshire Dales self catering accommodation have minimal effect on the natural environment. Individual lodges have been built on the lowest part of the site and screened using existing indigenous trees and shrubs to blend in with the natural environment. Green technology is used as follows:

  • Timber framed houses made from sustainable woodlands
  • Evergreen sedum (living plant based) roof
  • Insulation for walls made from recyclable paper, recycled materials
  • Natural spring water used for drinking and showers
  • Wood chip boilers, rainwater harvesting, reed bed sewerage system
  • Eco friendly cleaning and bathroom products, recyclable waste disposal bins

A percentage of the annual profits from the Yorkshire Dales self catering accommodation are set aside to support local sustainable and eco-friendly schemes. Staff and suppliers are from the local area, with local cleaning, electrician, and fire maintenance companies to support the ground operations.

By not having facilities for activities and restaurants on site we encourage our guests to go into Richmond and the surrounding area and support local businesses (horse riding, restaurants etc.). There will also be an information booklet in the lodge which lists local attractions including the Castle, Georgian Theatre Royal, local museums, farm shops, tea shops, and many more. An additional example of supporting the local community is sponsorship of the Swaledale Festival in 2009.

Letting agency: As a letting agency we also have a commitment to the local environment, economy & society, We encourage all holidaymakers to interact with the local community by giving advice to our clients regarding local activities and attractions. We are in the process of updating our website to list activities, attractions & local events to encourage the holiday maker to interact and consequently support local villages and businesses.

We recycle any unused brochures and also offer e-brochures in order to reduce our paper waste. We actively support the Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust (minimum £2,000 pa) who organise activities including educating local children about the Dales (e.g. walking with wildlife), training local villages in traditional methods (e.g. drystone walling), and investing in village infrastructure (e.g. restoring village halls). Together we are planting 2,100 trees in an overfarmed area to encourage the reintroduction of local fauna and flora and offset our corporate carbon emissions.  We have also been accredited as ‘Investors in People’ for our investment in training of our staff.
  • Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
