description
For those who enjoy the outdoors, we have created a week long hiking holiday in this beautiful region.

Located in a remote little village in the foothills of the Carpathian mountains. The guesthouses date back to the 1800s, although parts of them are much older as some medieval shooting embrasures reveal. They have been extensively restored to regain their old charm and character.

There is no doubt that this is a land made for exploring on foot, since there are practically no fences and you can walk for miles over meadows and through forests without meeting another human!

Transylvania is surrounded by a mighty range of the Carpathian mountains. We invite you to discover Transylvania as our grand- and great-grand parents knew it in the 1800's. Transylvania became famous not only due to the fiction of Count "Dracula", but also through the history of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the unique medieval villages and the excellent Romanian wines.
itinerary
Day 1:The village. Traditional horse-drawn cart will take you to your starting point. The hike along the ridge will take you through mature beech and hornbeam forests, medieval woodland pasture with oak and wild pear. You may meet Romanian shepherds with their flocks of sheep. 12km
Day 2:The Gorge. A land rover will drive you to your starting point at the dramatic Vargyas Gorge. The hike over the top of the gorge will take you through beech forests, a stone meadow with Steppe vegetation, and wild flower meadows. The gorge commands stunning panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, such as the volcanic plateau of the Hargita Mountains. An alternative route can be taken if you wish to see the caves and bats. 7km
Day 3:The King's Stone. The starting point of the hike is Plaiul Foii at the foot of the Piatra Craiului Mountain, which is the most spectacular limestone massif of the Southern Carpathians. In order to reach the peak, you will have to climb steep and exposed rock faces. This hike, however, can be adapted to suit different levels of physical fitness as there are alternative hiking routes in this area. 20km
Day 4:Free day. This day can be spent relaxing in and around the village or you can join one of our nature or culture tours.
Day 5:Rika. At the starting point of this hike you have the opportunity to visit the remains of Attila the Hun’s forest fortress, as well the as the burial site of his wife Rika. This hike will take you through extensive forests of beech, hornbeam and oak. Towards the end of your hike you will discover a basalt quarry, which is also designated as a geological site of special interest. 22km
Day 6:Black Mountains. You will start from an old iron furnace, which was used successfully to make canons used in the Hungarian Revolution of 1848-49. This hike takes you along the southern Harghita Mountains, where you will have wonderful views of the Csík basin. The hike ends at a mineral water spa, Uzonka Fürdo. 16km
Day 7:Fossil. The starting point of this hike is Ürmös village, where you also have the opportunity to see a marl cliff with fossilised clams and ammonites. This hike takes you over wild flower meadows, woodland pastures, and forested hills. 22km

Other activities: Skiing, horse-sleigh riding, visiting the ice gorge and cave, snow-shoeing, bear and wolf tracking and bird watching.
rooms, food and facilities
The guestrooms are furnished exclusively with antique Transylvanian furniture. We have taken particular care in making beds and seats comfortable, creating an atmosphere of peace and tranquillity. All rooms have double beds with specially manufactured mattresses of pure wool and duvet covers.

Each room has its own electric kettle, with both tea and coffee provided. Comfort is a priority, and we have paid particular attention to bathrooms and by building a sauna. The heating system is also original and based on wood-stoves.

Breakfast is served in a picturesque kitchen. Lunch and dinner can be served either in the dining room, under the arbors in the garden or in the wine cellar. We have extra living rooms and a billiard-room for bad weather or calm hours. You can enjoy vintage liquors and fine books in comfortable armchairs in front of the fireplace (and a satellite-TV set is also accessible if you really can't do without it!).

Our cuisine is mainly based on products from our garden or produced in the village. The bread is fresh from the oven. We do not use pesticides or chemical products. Our menus also contain local dishes, which we feel you will be pleased to discover. You will often have picnics during your trips and a rich dinner in the evenings. The meat and milk comes mainly from animals raised in the village and on its pastures.

Baby friendly:
We provide baby cot for families arriving with baby, and we also place a baby bathtub in the room to the baby and mother's convenience. We also have baby sitting service, in case families with little children require it. In the courtyard of our main guesthouse we have a playground with swing and sandbox for the children. It is convenient for the parents, too, because they can have an eye on their children while relaxing in the courtyard and garden. We organize trips, which suit younger children's pace and patience. There are horse pulled cart rides, that children especially enjoy, they can also enjoy the closeness of nature, farm animals and wild animals in the area, which could be a unique experience for "city-children".
how to find us

We are 3 hours by car from Bucharest International Airport, Romania. The InterCity-train takes 2 and 1/2 hours from Bucharest to Brasov (Kronstadt), where we can come and fetch you by Land Rover. Pick-up at the airport is also possible, at an extra fee.
how this holiday makes a difference
Shepherd, Transylvania walking holidayThis hiking holiday contributes to the environment by enhancing awareness of the forest region of Transylvania and introduces a variety of landscapes to guests. Since the hiking groups are small, the impact on the environment will be minimal.

The guests will also come into contact with communities outside the village, which will give them a greater insight into the ethnic tapestry that composes Transylvania. Our small enterprise provides employment for local families. Most of the food we serve as well as the building material we use is traditionally produced in the village and its surroundings.

We aim at restoring and preserving the historic architectural harmony of our village and its environment. The guest houses are part of the village and our guests become neighbours to the villagers for the length of their stay. We show our guests nature still in its unspoiled way. We monitor wildlife around the village and make the villagers understand why it is so important to preserve it. We promote sustainable tourism also by limiting the amount of rooms available.

All our employees are local and benefit from high training standards. Our staff is now skilled in their new professions, be it the cook, the guide or the restoration worker. We purchase most goods locally, even traditional building materials like hand made tiles, bricks and lime. Our taxes go to the local council helping to develop the village. Profit generated by the guests is re-invested directly in the restoration of our cultural heritage. Thus the entire village largely benefits from our undertaking.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
