description
The holiday is based out of the very Spanish village of Lubrin, Almeria which is the eastern most province of the Andalucian region of Southern Spain.
Lubrin pueblo is a typical Andalucian village tucked away some 2000ft in the Sierra de Los Filabres and just 45 minutes inland from Mojacar on the Costa del Almeria.. It’s charm lies in its narrow streets, its white village houses adorned with bright geraniums and bougainvillea, and its endless sunshine. Not forgetting the charming villagers of Lubrin that provide for all the basic holiday necessities and includes 2 Supermarkets, 2 Bakers, 2 Butchers, Bank with ATM machine, Post Office, 3 Restaurants and numerous Tapas Bars. The main fiestas are January 20th, Mid August and early October.
There are also additional fiestas in the surrounding hamlets. The self catering accommodation is to be found in a renovated Andalician Cortijo(Farmhouse) full of character yet spacious and with modern amenities. All accommodation has log burning stoves and central heating so one can enjoy the warm & sunny winter days and cosy and comfortable winter nights. The Farmhouse is set on a hilltop and surrounded by terraced lawns and Olive, Almond and Pomegranate trees. The mountain views are truly panoramic and on a clear day include the Mediterranean sea. There is a swimming pool to cool off on those very hot days or just pick a shady spot to read a book, sip a glass of wine or take in the views. For the more active there are moderate self guided mountain walks right outside the main door. The very Spanish village of Lubrin is just a 5 minute walk. Lubrin is ideally located to explore the surrounding inland and coastal areas. Places of interest include Cuevas de Almanzora for its cave houses, Sorbas for its geology and National Parks of Tabernas and Cabo de Gata.
Granada and the Sierra Nevada are just 2 hours away on the new Almeria to Sevilla motorway. Cortijo Fuente Arriba offers complete rest and relaxation, honeymooning, walking, an excellent base for exploring and sightseeing and an unforgettable experience of Spanish mountain hospitality from the delightful and charming villagers of Lubrin.

travellers' tales
The most memorable would have to be sitting outside the apartment in the evening, looking out onto the hills and soaking up the peace and tranquillity. The beaches around Cabo de Gata came a close second. (more)

how this holiday makes a difference
|
The Cortijo dates back more than 100 years but we insulated the ceilings of the upper floor. In reforming the outbuildings of Phase 2 we have constructed new roofs with 200mm thick insulation and the walls are dry-lined with plasterboard laminated with 40mm of insulation.
We discovered the village of Lubrin in Almeria and at a time when the traditional industries of agriculture, animal husbandry and mining were in steep decline. Promoting rural holiday accommodation in a renovated farmhouse just outside the village provides the traveller with unique regional food, wine and cultural experiences and helps with the revival of a small community by providing income and jobs for the villagers. The local people are interested to discover about of life outside of Lubrin where the older generation has spent little or no time traveling outside the village. We ask guests to support the village by buying all their consumables here and trying the local foods and specialties. We employ a single parent local woman to carry out the domestic cleaning and a retired farmer to maintain the gardens. We use a local builder to maintain the fabric of the old Cortijo and outbuildings and a local plumber and electrician to maintain the infrastructure. We locally purchase hard and soft furnishings, white goods and electrical items. We also locally purchase our food and household items. Almeria is a low rainfall area and so travellers are reminded that fresh water is a very precious commodity and should not be wasted, so use a minimum for showering and washing. We ask that guests ensure that lights and ceiling fans are switched off when not required, and do not leave TV, Video, Hi-F,i etc in standby mode – switch off at the set. Separate household waste is sorted into general waste, glass, paper & cardboard and plastic. We support our local PAWS (Peoples Animal Welfare Society) by taking stray animals to their compound and also by delivering personal and household effects to their charity shop in Mojacar. We encourage travellers to walk into village and use the local bus. We sponsor a village website and are listing the local services to show travellers that there are all the basic necessities on our doorstep. |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
