description
Fifteen minutes from the coastal town of Allepey can transport you into a whole new world tessellated by narrow canals and winding water ways.

Located at a gentle bend of the slow flowing river Pampa, on it’s lower waterfront is this homestay, with its rich traditional architecture imbued with timeless charm was raised over a hundred years ago. Nestled amidst the shady trees and the perfect ecological vegetation, is the 110 year old house. For those en famille, this is the place to enjoy the luxury of being truly alone when time acquires a meditative quality determining ones attitude to the day ahead.

The structure is enveloped in greenery and is sympathetic to its environs with a generous spread of spice (nutmeg, cinnamon, pepper, clove, cashewnut and coffee) and herbal plants. In the charming quietude of this home, you may laze away your evening under the leafy canopy of a guava tree which stands sentinel in the amoeba shaped pool. You hear the rustle of the leaves as the cool evening breeze plays with them-Muse enough for a poet. Float, if you so choose, on a bamboo raft in the encircling placid waters of the pool from where you watch the residual brilliance illuminating the evening sky after sunset. It creates a relaxed ambience that helps you to unwind.

Backwaters, Heritage homestay in KeralaFamily friendly: Our homestay loves to welcome families as we believe happy families make happy children, who are the future. The house itself is witness to the hair-raising activities of 7 little ones who visit them on and off during the year. Whenever the children are at home, the children who come with their families to stay at our property are free to play with them and do all the activities they involve themselves in like reading and colouring etc.

Baby friendly: We are happy to have babies at the homestay as long as other clients in the neighbouring rooms are not disturbed.

  • how this holiday makes a difference
Sensitivity to the delicate ecological balance seen all around is our motto. In fact, the rich vegetation seen in abundance around the house is maintained in the best possible manner by the retired professor and his once zoology professor. We do not use of any kind of pesticide that kills both plants and animals around the premises but use more natural means of eradication like smoking and usage of medicinal herbs etc. Cutting down of age old trees is a big no as it disturbs the habitat of numerous migrating and domestic birds.

Water bungalow, Heritage homestay in KeralaThe cottages that are built in the property are 200 year old wooden structures that were being demolished by families that could not maintain such old houses. These have been bought from them and reset in its original setting thereby we have avoided concrete structures and other modern building materials in the property.

Even the roofing is done with a natural plant fibre which is hand woven, locally called “paya” thereby reducing the wood usage which in turn would have contributed to the increase in deforestation.

The water table in the soil is maintained by rained water conservation in the form of an aquatic pond. Moreover, one of the wooden cottages is constructed on stilts amidst water channels which is a natural habitat to a large number of fishes and micro organisms.

Special care is taken to see that no kind of waste disposal is done into the backwaters and the usage of plastic is reduced to a minimum. There is a waste recycling compost in the area where all biodegradable waste is put in to be converted into manure. Vegetables are bought from organic farms and some of it are grown in our own backyard, thereby guarantying our food to be fresh. Latest low flush toilets are bought for minimum water consumption.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've lead the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
