description
We offer this beautiful lodge, a cosy, traditionally decorated self-contained home amid spectacular mountain scenery & traditional villages. The 2 bedroom home has its own private gardens abundant with tropical fruit trees with BBQ & summer hut in the garden for al-fresco eating. The lodge is mainly self catering but we can arrange board or other support if needed. 24 hour support is always available from owners who live nearby, so there is no need to feel isolated.
We can invite traditional artists, dancers and musicians from the local area into your home to teach or allow you to partake in any local skill you may wish to learn about, or if you wish we can arrange for you to visit traditional craft villages to learn and discover new skills. This is done without any intervention from us. You can learn traditional african dancing, drumming, woodcarving, language, weaving, African bead and jewelery design, you can even build and design your own African hut in the grounds.
We also offer many types of agricultural activities which will often mean visiting a local village, either by mountain bike along the tracks or trekking, here you can partpiticpate and learn to make your own local palm wine, apeteshie, (the local fire water) or make fufuf or cassava both staples made from maize and cassava, and many others. Perfomances, carried out by a local African dance group, can be done in the grounds of the lodge, you and the kids can even learn and join in. This is a way of utilising all types of village talents to enhance local employent and income, sharing ideas.
Our lodge is surrounded by a myraid of mountian hiking/biking trails. The area is a mountain biker's and trekker's paradise and a fantasic locally run mountain biking and trekking tour company operates just minutes from the lodge. The tours can be combined with some of the activities which you can do at different villages along your route. Also trekking or biking around you wil come across beatuiful waterfalls or hidden villages. Culturally, the place is amazing as almost every weekend spectacular Akan funerals displaying colourful traditional costumes and ancient rites take place in the villages around the lodge. It’s a site not to be missed and you will more often than not be invited to join in! Within an hours drive of the lodge is the Shai Hills Game Reserve, beatiful untouched beaches in which nest rare turtles, some of West Africa's most colorful bead markets and bead making villages, and the bustling city of Accra Personal tours throughout Ghana available.
Within an hours' drive is the beach, with the opportunity for many water sports, during season spotting the rare giant turtles which come to nest on its shores, or you can visit the various remote islands and mangrove swamps within the estuary by canoe. Also within a hours' drive is Shai Hills game reserve, two famous African Bead Markets, Accra itself with its many attractions, and a rainforest reserve with many specimens of rare flora and fauna. The whole mountain around the lodge is surrounded with hiking and mountain biking trails. A great local hiking and mountain biking company is within minutes of the lodge where you can hire all equipment you need and either go on self guided or guided treks and mountain bike tours. The routes are signposted, allowing for self guided tours. You can also bring your own bikes. Also opportunities exist for volunteering activites, such as helping in local schools or orphanages.

The villa is perched on the side of a hill with an incredible view over the surrounding green hills. Aburi is a lovely place to stay and we wished we had stayed for longer. (more)

The accommodation, as much as possible uses renewable energy, and harvests most of the rainwater, we recycle as much waste as possible, to re-use as organic fertilser for the vegetable farm. We intend to use a proportion of all profits, to further the promotion of remote rural eco-tourism sites, which will generate an income and encourage the preservation of local wildlife and fauna, and there will be an awareness among local people that the preservation and enhancement of their local environment generates more outside interest and thus income. We also support and and advise guests to visit many of the existing communitiy eco-tourism sites in Ghana, which are run communally by the village. We only use and employ local staff and have positively encouraged the use of many local craftsmen and artists on the building of the project and now in the day to day running by encouraging them to share their skills with the guests staying athe lodge. We encourage guest to visit and participate in the local schools and other educational and ecomomic activities. |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
