description
Historic cottages in a protected valley only twenty minutes from a huge sandy beach and ten minutes from Ephesus.
The 200 year old stone cottages have been fully restored and filled with rustic antiques from all over Turkey. The cottages stand on the edge of the village in their own gardens and it easy to stroll down the cobble streets into the village where the locals are selling dried herbs from the hillsides and offering samples of their olive oil or wine.
It took 6 years to restore these three historic properties to their former glory, retaining the peaceful quality which fills the village.
This village has been in existence as long as its famous sister Ephesus just down the hillside. Farmers have been tending the olive groves in which the village nestles. This is literally the end of the road, albeit a charming country road which winds up to the village. Many of the houses are still unrestored and in many ways time has stood still here. You can here nightingales and owls and enjoy the array of stars at night or wander through the profusion of wild flowers which line the paths all over the valley. Enjoy the sense of history, the spectacular views and the friendly locals. An unforgettable experience, please join us and see for yourself.
Family friendly: The village stands at the end of a country road and there are no cars in the village but just cobbled streets. There are limitless walks all over the surrounding hills with views down to the bay of Ephesus and winding tracks through olive groves or pine forests. Horses and donkeys are available for hire in the village if children prefer to ride.
Activities: Exploring the ruined monasteries in the valley, exploring the ancient sites in the area, visiting the local beaches. Sampling the fresh local produce and wines. Visiting the local market towns and watching craftsmen make kutahya pottery, felt rugs and weave baskets.

travellers' tales
To top this experience, future travels will have to be unbelievable! I would recommend this vacation experience to anyone. (more)
rooms, food and facilities
The houses are all fully serviced. If you arrive in winter the cottages will be heated and a fire will be roaring in the grate. In summer the houses have thick stone walls so they tend to be cool but air conditioning is available if needed upstairs. The houses have two or three bedrooms and individual features such as roll top baths or four poster beds and they provide cd players and a small selection of jazz and classical cds. Breakfast will be delivered to you in a basket full of local produce or served on the terrace. All houses have facilities for outside dining and well equipped kitchens.
how to find our Ephesus holiday accommodation
The village is an easy 50 minute drive from Izmir International airport where self drive cars can be hired. Selcuk which is only 10 minutes away is well connected by intercity buses from all over Turkey. The village is one hour away from Izmir and two hours away from Bodrum. We can help with car hire arrangements and can arrange for people to be picked up or dropped off at the airport for an additional fee.how this holiday makes a difference
Heating at our Ephesus holiday accommodation is provided by cast iron caulderons using olive wood trimmed from the olive groves or replaceable wood supplies. Insulation was incorporated into the walls to avoid loss of heat in the winter and to prevent overheating in summer. The water for the houses is heated by solar energy. The waste wood from the olive grove is used to provide fuel for the winter heating. Wherever possible we have used energy saving bulbs and have put notices up encouraging visitors not to waste water or energy wherever possible. Wherever possible things are purchased from the village and the villagers for the cottages. Fresh produce is purchased from the neighbours including local goats cheese. Local people are employed to run the houses. Local craftsmen were used for the restoration using traditional methods. All windows were made from local wood in the exact style of the original frames. Even the hinges on the shutters and the locking mechanism were forged by the local blacksmith. The area surrounding the houses has been planted with fruit and olive trees and all existing trees around the houses have been preserved during the construction. The café uses Olive oil form our organic olive grove. All furnishings at our Ephesus holiday accommodation are natural materials either cotton or wool in the form of felt used to insulate underneath carpets. |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
