Samoa beach resort

country:Samoa
location:Upolu Island
price:From £12 - £38 per person per night low season. Price depends on accommodation & season chosen. Minimum age 12 years.

description
This beach resort is hidden away at the most beautiful natural beach area behind the deep forest of Saanapu village on the south coast of Upolu island.

We do not know if we should call this place a hotel, hostel, backpackers or a deluxe resort, as there is no name for the finest of natural beauty.

In harmony with the nature you stay in one of our traditional handmade "Fales" (huts) just a few steps from the ocean, the walls are made of woven coconut leafs and your mattress is on the floor that is covered with hand made mats. If you prefer the more western style, one of our comfortable bungalows with your own toilet and shower will be ready for you. Our power is solar and 220V, and most of the water comes from the rain.

If you get tired of snorkelling and looking at fishes in crystal clear water, we will show you how to weave a coconut leaf basket or how to open a coconut. We will also show you how to paddle an outrigger canoe, do Samoan herbal medicine, cooking and much more.

This resort is not only about accommodation, it is about giving yourself time to slow down and get used to living the island way. Enjoy watching the stars sitting on the beach at night or stroll along to find your private cove for the day. A short walk will take you into Saanapu village where you will be part of the daily village life. The Saanapu village has one of the most beautiful mangrove areas in Samoa which you will be able to see from the nature walk or by renting one of the village canoes. This is a perfect place to relax and meet many other travellers and also to get used to the new culture and climate.

  • how this holiday makes a difference
One of our main goals is to preserve the culture by showing our guests (free daily tours) traditional practises like basket weaving, how to open a coconut, making of coconut oil, use of plants for herbal medicine, fishing, paddling an outrigger canoe, village walks with visits to the local school, traditional cooking (UMU) and much more.

Bungalow, Samoa beach resortThe most important part is that we make our employees and the village proud of their culture which they regard as something important and not something that should be replaced by the western society. They understand that the culture is the reason why people travel to Samoa and it is their greatest sales tool.

We are using solar power alongside normal 220V power for lighting and for computers in the main building although the restaurant and bar are only lit by candles. All Fales (huts) are using 220V lighting and outlets, all outside lighting of the resort is lit by kerosene lamps.

Our water partly comes from the rain and we hope to be able to use our own spring in the near future. To make the water last longer, we like to inform our guests by signs to “save the water today as we hope for another sunny day in paradise tomorrow”.

We separate rubbish in different bins for composting, burnable materials or hard waste which reduces our rubbish burden on the island to a minimum. All glass bottles are recycled and brought back to the capital Apia. Only natural building material are used with no harm to the nature when replaced.

We plant fruit trees like papaya, star fruit, mango and passion fruits using the seeds from the waste when preparing fruits for breakfast. It takes time but the garden is growing bigger and bigger and it is all organic.

We are the only employer in the village with 40 employees. We support the village by buying all building material for our Fales, handmade mats, pigs, chickens, fish, fruits and vegetables from the local families. The village is also earning a small entrance fee for every car coming to our resort (plus our own). A nature (mangrove) walk way has been created by the village and many times a week guided tours are made from our resort. Each guest can make a donation helping to maintain the walk-way.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
