introduction to Luxury Loch Ness apartment, Scotland

This luxury apartment sleeps 4 people and is in the former school of St Benedict’s Abbey at Fort Augustus, a magnificent building standing in 20 acres of beautifully maintained grounds at the southern end of Loch Ness.

This fabulous grade A listed building, dating from 1876, is without doubt one of the most unique holiday destinations in Scotland. It is certainly unique to Loch Ness - there really is nothing to compare in the area in terms of history, architecture, location and quality. The Abbey is surrounded on three sides by the waters of Loch Ness, the Caledonian Canal and the River Tarff.

Aerial view of Loch Ness accommodationRelax in the acres of lawns with mature trees which descend broad flights of Victorian steps, down to the waters edge. The views down the length of Loch Ness are ever changing with mist, sun and showers intermingling – rainbows are frequent. The canal offers endless hours of interest as the boats pass up and down the series of locks. No need to stand and watch – sit at an open air café table by the canal side with a cup of coffee and let it all pass you by.

A quiet path leads you around the perimeter of the abbey grounds along the canal and past the Boathouse restaurant that overhangs the loch. The path continues beside the shore of Loch Ness, along the river and back to the village. Shops, restaurants and bars are just a few hundred yards beyond the garden grounds.

The apartment used to be the mathematics room in the former school. It has now been restored and is high quality and very comfortable – just the place to relax after a long days exploration of the Highland scene.

how this holiday makes a difference
Grounds of St Benedicts Abbey accommodation This abbey, having lain empty for years after the monks left, has been restored to apartments that allow the ordinary person to experience the history, archaeology and architecture of this magnificent building.

During the restoration of the abbey buildings the developers have taken lengths to protect the wildlife of the vicinity with heated bat boxes being put in several of the loft spaces and boxes placed in trees around the grounds. Certain trees with potential bat roost sites have been retained as have the majority of the mature trees of landscape value.

The developers have chosen not to use chemical treatments in the rehabilitation of the historic fabric of the buildings, choosing a holistic approach instead.

We encourage our visitors to use the large choice of restaurants, cafes and bars, as well as the recycling facilities, located within the village.

We have been environmentally aware for the past 40 years and have used Ecover products for all of that time, long before we started self catering. Our care in water saving dates back similarly, to when we had cesspool drainage, when every drop wasted had to be emptied at a price; we soon learnt to be economical with water. Ecover is used in all the cottages we own or manage.

We have also purchased 90 acres of pasture and woodland to return the pasture to native woods. We have planted 20,000 young trees, some of which are now over 10 feet tall. We look forward to seeing it a fully fledged wood within the next decade with all the associated wildlife that that will bring. There are already very many species of birds in the newly regenerating habitat.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
