how this holiday makes a difference
We use energy efficient lighting and all electrical appliances are A or B rated. We use blending valves on refurbishment to decrease the use of hot water and reduce the amount of potentially wasted water. We install the latest dual flush toilets. All but 2 of our rooms have showers. We invite guests to only leave out towels for washing when they require.Bio degradable products are utilised wherever possible. The garden is weeded by hand to preclude weed killers, and to encourage the robins, dunnocks and blackbirds we have visiting us. Also butterflies and hummingbird moths. We encourage visiting schools to take interest in the “Bat Hospital” where injured bats are treated & returned to the wild whenever possible, or looked after to end their lives naturally. We use glass containers whenever available and bottles with deposits to encourage less waste. We recycle all other glass, cans, and textiles. Because of our policy of fresh local food cooked to order, there is virtually no waste food. We reduce paper use in the office. All paper is recycled paper. As much work is carried out electronically as possible and machinery is not left on “standby”. We source as much locally as available. We support Island organically grown and GM free. We work closely with neighbouring hotels. We have local casual labour, stockists and contractors to carry out various works not undertaken by ourselves. We support Naomi House, the Hospice for children from the Isle of Wight and we also support the local inshore rescue lifeboat that is not RNLI. |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
