description
This award winning 4 star self catering holiday accommodation is situated on the edge of the historical and beautiful village of Alton within Staffordshire Moorlands in the Peak District. It has open views of the Staffordshire countryside from the organic, south facing garden.
The garden is private and enclosed with access direct from the house to the patio, ideal for al fresco dining. The house sleeps 7 (+1 and cot) in 4 bedrooms. There are 2 doubles (1 is en suite), a twin and a single. There is a family bathroom too. This makes the house perfect for families, friends, and larger groups and we are open all year and provide short breaks.
It is an ideal base for walking and exploring, volunteer work for Staffordshire Wildlife Trust, cycling or simply relaxing. There are also fabulous opportunities to visit local gardens, historic houses and the great outdoors. We now have a bespoke service allowing guests to plan extra features or activities from a dinner party to guided walking and climbing
The house is run as sustainably as possible and we support the local environment and economy. Our aim is that while taking care of you, we take care of the environment. You will find a selection of Fair Trade teas and coffee and an organic cake to welcome you. For those staying for a week we provide a free organic breakfast basket for your 1st morning.
Green courses and garden tours: Alton-based tourism business, Simply Staffordshire, have introduced 2 new titles to their day course program. Guests can now spend a day in the beautiful Staffordshire countryside learning new skills and having fun. “Growing Your Own Food” and “Green Housekeeping” offer guests the chance to learn how to save money and enjoy new skills.
The mother and daughter team, Maggie and Emily, have put together the new courses to promote greener living: supporting guests to learn how to save money and enjoy a healthier lifestyle. “Grow Your Own Food” is an introduction to growing, covering the basic issues: where, how much to grow, costs of time and money and so on. “Green Housekeeping” is a fun day helping you to save money and reduce the amount of chemicals being used in your home.
Emily said “We are very excited about the new course titles. They are the perfect way to learn new skills, save money and have a fun day out. The courses are set in beautiful surroundings. Guests will receive experienced tuition, enjoy delicious home cooked food and meet like minded people, while learning to make positive changes in their lives!”

how this holiday makes a difference
|
We have been awarded Gold in the Tourism category at the 2007 Staffordshire Green Award Ceremony. We aim to be as environmentally responsible as possible but are happy to acknowledge that we are not perfect. We are keen to show guests that while they relax and enjoy their 4 star holiday they can also be environmentally responsible without too much work. We use water hippos, low energy bulbs, we don't allow chemical cleaner in the house and provide good range of Ecover products, supply washable nappies, great recycling facilities with instructions including paper, tins, plastics, glass, cardboard and composting facilities too.
We also communicate to our guests where they can shop local for their own food and souvenirs. This includes the farm shop, farmers markets, local food store, local fair-trade shops and fair-trade town of Ashbourne. We can also arrange a tour of the Burleigh pottery factory. We offer a babysitting service using the local nursery nurses. We provide a printed explanation of the organically managed garden in the accommodation for guests to read. We explain why we keep the lawn quite long to reduce energy use and water consumption, why we leave seed heads on through the winter for bird feeding. We also use water butts and not hoses. We explain the non usage of chemical in the garden and how we manage pests and weeds. We also offer little tours of the organic veg garden next door explaining the raised beds and food production for our family. We can also arrange a short course in home grown food. We arrange guided walks for guests who want to explore the conservation area in more detail. We use a local guide who is able to detail local concerns and issues about the environment. We have a ‘buy local policy’ and have close links with our local organic farm shop and cheese maker. We offer their products to our guests and can arrange delivery to the accommodation. While fitting out the accommodation, we have used local suppliers from bedding to electrical equipment. We also have an ongoing policy to use local craftsmen, professional engineers and shops. An example is that we have used local Burleigh pottery as it is the last pottery in Stoke using traditional transfer print methods. This is helping maintain local craft and expertise with no out sourcing abroad. We also encourage guest to visit the historic factory for a tour. We promote activities and days out that don’t involve guests needing to use their cars. We provide information for our guests to try alternative days out by volunteering for the Staffordshire Wildlife Fund. We are also able to offer guided walks to guide visitors to specific areas of interest like local waterways, conservation areas and National Trust woodland. Guests also have information of local water company conservation schemes offering days out and information centres. |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
