  • how this holiday makes a difference
At this Caithness hotel in Thurso we and our local staff consider ourselves members of the community and are always willing to consider helping and or sponsoring local projects e.g. beach cleaning. We try to lead by example in our practises; we were the first in the Green Tourism Business Scheme to achieve Gold and still the only one in the county.

We use as much local produce such as meat, fish, fruit and vegetables as we can. We use very few chemicals. We have many water saving devices, new energy efficient boilers, fridges and kettles. We recycle glass, cans, paper, cardboard, food waste and furniture. We buy recycled products when practical. Our new rooms have shower only and We are installing low energy light fittings during redecoration programmes.

Lots of local businesses benefit from our custom such as the butcher, baker, fishmonger, egg lady, vegetable and fruit growers. Our residents are also known to buy from them and take home fresh products vacuum packed on the plane!! Our customers also use local taxis, restaurants, bars, ferries and many visit local tourist attractions. We sell Jewellery locally, made by a lady in her 90s. We all help each other in a small community like ours.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've lead the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
