description
Charming Grade II listed granary beside a quiet lane.

This Isle of Wight self catering accommodation is on the edge of the pretty village of Brighstone, 1/2 mile from the sea and originally formed part of Brighstone Mill dating back to 1700. Converted in 1990, the cottage has an unusual layout. The living accommodation is on the first floor where there is an open plan lounge/diner and kitchen with views of the surrounding countryside. The ground floor has two bedrooms and a bathroom.

The cottage is furnished to a high standard; and with double glazing and a gas central heating system is ideal for holidays and short breaks all year round. Outside, there is a beautiful enclosed garden complete with patio and furniture. A dedicated parking space is available.

Brighstone is one of the most attractive villages on the Isle of Wight. It has two churches, two pubs, tearoom, newsagent, grocery shop, post office and a National Trust shop and museum. The Brighstone Forest is approximately 2 miles away and you will find some spectacular views around the island high up on the Downs.
special things to do and see here

The Isle of Wight is all about dinosaurs, beach and cliff top walks or leaping from the cliffs with a paraglider - possibly not everyone’s cup of tea, but the island offers something for almost everyone.

For the children there are numerous beaches, theme parks, wildlife parks and other tourist activities to visit. For the adults and families there is Osborne House, Carisbrooke Castle, Brading Roman Villa, numerous craft centres, Alum Bay theme park and chair lift, fishing trips, Island pleasure flights, guided walks..... plus much much more.

The Island has many nice pubs serving local beer and good reasonably priced food. Many of these also have live entertainment. The local ‘Countryman’ is within easy walking distance and provides excellent quality food. Also recommended are the Crown at Shorwell and the White Mouse Inn at Chale.
lower carbon travel
We encourage guests without cars and arrange and pay the ferry fare for guests travelling as foot passengers. From our experience guests then use use public transport and cycles to get round the island.
travellers' tales
We gave the town business (through the pubs, etc.), so it benefited the people and we also did not use a car for 8 days. (more)

  • how this holiday makes a difference
The owners support the Green Island Tourism Project and the accommodation has achieved ‘Gold’ Green Island Award status. The aim is to minimise the harmful effects and maximise the beneficial influences that activities have on the Island’s environment.

Visitors are encouraged to participate in the local recycling scheme which includes newspapers, magazines, glass & kitchen waste. Filament light bulbs are gradually being replaced with their low energy equivalent, green transport is promoted, and ferry tickets are funded for guests who travel as ferry foot passengers. Marketing material is kept to a minimum and most communication is via website and email with brochures only printed and distributed on request. Recycled products are used where practical and the owners support local environmental initiatives such as Gift to Nature, an Isle of Wight project to improve the natural environment and restore habitats on the island. Donations are welcomed.

In the accommodation, old furniture and furnishings have been replaced with new, bought on the island. A local cleaner/caretaker, window cleaner, handyman and gardener are employed and the garden was landscaped by local company. A welcome pack of fresh produce is available from the local shop. There is a directory of local suppliers provided in the cottage.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
