description
This tailor made safari takes you on an extraordinary personal journey through coastal Tanzania, bush walking and canoeing. You will also experience East Africa’s unique Swahili culture, Tanzania’s diverse and fascinating people and spectacular scenery. This holiday is arranged and organised by the family that runs the camp. As such they have expert local knowledge and experience.

Each day you will do as much walking as you choose, starting after a leisurely breakfast. The only requirements are comfortable shoes and clothing and sun protection, cameras and binoculars. Your other equipment will be moved for you from camp to camp. During the heat of the day you will rest in the shade, only to keep moving in the late afternoon. You will generally reach your camp in time for a sundowner. Every night you will dine under the stars.

Each camp is set up especially for your group and is totally private. You will not see any other people while on this safari. You will experience a variety of beautiful scenery and plentiful bird life. Whilst you will see evidence of much wildlife our experienced and knowledgeable guides are cautious not to expose you to undue risk. The best months in Tanzania are from June to January. June to October are the coolest months.
itinerary
Day 1:Arrive Dar es Salaam. Transfer to our hotel, set on the shores of the Indian Ocean.
Day 2:Fly to our conservation area camp, landing on our own airstrip. Enjoy yarns around the camp fire and dinner under the stars. Spend the night in the camp surrounded by the sounds of Africa.
Day 3:Walk to the 'Top Camp' where the view is spectacular. The path to the camp meanders along ancient elephant tracks.
Day 4:Explore the sand river, Lusangazi, where the signs of the previous night's activities are very evident. Sleep tonight in the forest by the river Wami.
Day 5:Not much walking today as you canoe down the river. The lapping of the water on the boat is disturbed only by the bird calls and the sounds of monkeys playing on the shores.
Day 6:Leave the river and walk back through the riverine forest and up the hill to our camp... as you go watch the hundreds of butterflies and sample some of the edible fruits of the forest.
Day 7:Today is spent either in camp or visiting the nearby village, Matipwili, to enjoy the sights and sounds of Tanzanian village life.
Day 8:Leave by air for Dar es Salaam.
travellers' tales
We simply had an amazing experience and felt we were experiencing a bit of the real Africa. Relaxing, enlightening, full of laughter, full of food, great activities, great "room", great welcome. The whole experience really was unbelievable and we cannot wait to return.  (more)
travelling with a local operator
This holiday is operated by a company based in the holiday destination and they will be able to provide expert local knowledge. They will be able to tailor make your holiday to suit your requirements not only concerning the dates of travel but also typically the standard of accommodation, and thus price. It is rare for local operators to be able to help with the booking of your flights.
how this holiday makes a difference
This trip makes a difference to the community of Matipwili who have little or no income other than that generated by subsistence farming. The trip offers direct employment to a number of villagers in a village where there is only one other employer. 100% of our employees are from the village.

Canoeing on Tanzania bush safariWhere possible all our purchases are made in Matipwili. We pay a monthly concession fee to the village for the use of their land. In addition we pay a bed night levy of 10% for each visitor and a US $2 fee for each visitor taken to the village.

Guests have the option of making a donation to various social projects that are facilitated on an ongoing basis by the company. So far, over US $17000 has been raised for the building of a secondary school in Matipwili which will ensure that students from Matipwili can stay at home for their education rather than travel and board away from home. We are totally sponsoring the education of 18 secondary school students from Matipwili. Our camp is built almost entirely from renewable materials. By walking in the area we are inhibiting poaching activities and assisting our conservation efforts.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
