traveller reviews for Organic farmstay accommodation in Somerset

It was really nice to feel, just for a minute, that we were part of an organic farm, as this is my dream. We had a small glimpse into the hard work but satisfying life of organic farming. (more)

weddings - hand fasting ceremonies
In 2005 we built the Stone Circle for Fran & Rachel's Druid hand-fasting ceremony. Built from ancient staddle stones, the circle lies on the edge of a wood upon a hilltop with breathtaking views across Somerset & Bridgwater Bay, with Glastonbury Tor lying to the East and the distant, snow-topped Welsh mountains to the north.

A hand-fasting is an ancient celebration of a sacred union between two people. The ceremony is not as formal as a Christian service and includes thanks to all the gods & goddesses of the seasons, the harvest, of fertility and of life itself. You can write your own words exactly as you choose, use bubbles, feathers, leaves & flames or other representatives of the elements and include as many friends & family as you wish. Most of all a hand-fasting is about celebration!

It is a really enjoyable & sociable experience that will stay in people's mind for years to come. We will provide all your guests with transport to and from the stone circle and each of them will have our own natural confetti (made from organic rose, cornflower & marigold petals) to celebrate the ceremony. Your own friends & family members can perform the actual service or you can employ the services or a more experienced handfaster - we have a Druid priestess who can help if required.

In the farmhouse we can cater for 45 seated in the dining hall, up to 70 if we include the drawing room and up to 100 in the marquee. We source our food locally & organic where possible. Most of the salad, vegetables & soft fruit come from our own 2.5 acre kitchen garden. Fully organic catering is available if required.

Please note: Under English law a handfasting is not a legally recognised marriage as it is not yet legal to be married under the open sky.

how this holiday makes a difference
We have farmed organically since 2001. We are part of the countryside stewardship scheme and have instigated a large environmental programme over the last 4 years including the planting of hundreds of metres of indigenous hedging, new broadleaved woodland trees, the digging out & restoration of natural spring fed lakes & ponds re-discovered from old maps, planting 6m field margin buffer zones & over wintering stubble fields to increase the bio-diversity which has led to huge increases in the local population of insects, birds and small mammals. This year we have had the first hares back for nearly 40 years!

Piglet, Somerset farmstay accommodationOur B&B, self catering & camping field all offer recycling facilities and we will re-use everything given the opportunity, including waste water from showers & washing facilities.

Our plan involves reparation work with the local Youth Offending Team and ‘on the job’ training skills given to adults with severe learning difficulties from the Huntspill Project, with a view to them attaining employment within the agricultural or horticultural industry. This is a non-profit making enterprise and therefore will be fairly price locally produced food for local people.

Our project at Bridgwater is producing Local Food for Local People, minimising food miles and using organic practices. We are also opening up the fields and farmland for walkers and visitors to visit and explore. The increase in bio-diversity alone is well worth seeing!

We are patrons of Open Hands India. Although it is not a local charity it was started by our next door neighbour! We hold several fund raising events each year to raise money for her village projects.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
