description
Originally built as a gentleman's residence in 1872 the hotel has been in our family for 40 years and over that time has established a reputation for good food and friendly service. Ventnor is renowned for its mild climate and has an almost Mediterranean feel, due to its southern aspect and the shelter it receives from the high cliffs and downlands behind it. Just to the west of the town the hotel stands in acre of grounds and boasts its own private access to Ventnor park, coastal paths and walks. These lead to Ventnor beach, Steephill Cove, Botanical gardens and further.
Our dining room faces the park and serves traditional breakfast and a five course evening dinner using fresh local produce whenever possible. The daily changing Menus always feature fish and vegetarian dishes as well as a choice of two other main courses. For special occasions there is an a la carte menu offering local seafood amongst other dishes. To compliment your dinner we have a good selection of wines and liqueurs. For your relaxation in the evenings we have a well stocked bar and lounges.
All bedrooms are ensuite, comfortably furnished with colour television, tea making facilities and telephone. Some are family suites with a separate child's bedroom and communicating door. Our lower gardens and patio face south west and are ideal to soak up the sun. The upper gardens face due south across the Channel and offer seclusion with wonderful views and access to Ventnor park. The 40ft pool is heated to a comfortable temperature from May to October, there is also a children's paddling pool for younger guests. Drinks and light lunches are available from the bar to enhance a relaxing stay.
By bus: From Ryde take the number 3 bus to Ventnor. From Cowes take the number 1 to Newport, then the number 3 to Ventnor or from East Cowes take the number 5 to Newport, then the number 3 to Ventnor.
By car: From Ryde follow the A3055 to Ventnor.

how this holiday makes a difference
|
In 2006 we were awarded a Green Island Tourism award of Gold standard. This is the top-level sustainable tourism certificate and indicates excellent environmental, economic & social performance across all ten awards criteria; energy, water, waste, purchasing, customer experience, wildlife & landscape, innovation, marketing & management and transport.
Our laundry machines wash at the eco-friendly temperature of 30 degrees. We encourage our guests to reuse their towels to reduce the amount of laundry produced. We have installed loft insulation to reduce heat loss. We recycle our glass bottles and paper. And use low wattage lighting within health and safety limits. And use smaller kettles in the rooms cutting down on electricity. We offer a healthy working environment for our staff. We endeavour to employ a number of our staff all year round even though ours is a seasonal business. We support local charity events annually within the hotel. We are involved in a scheme that is promoting a greener Island by planting flowers on what was previously unkempt ground. |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
